Gabriel’s first half goal was enough to give ten-man Arsenal a potentially crucial win at Wolves.
The defender ended our four-game scoreless streak with a close range finish from a corner, but the hard work was done after we were reduced to ten min 20 minutes from time.
Gabriel Martinelli was the man dismissed, for two identical offences within the space of a few seconds.
But after that our defence stood firm in the face of sustained pressure from the home side, and earned a victory to move us up to fifth place in the league.
The opening 20 minutes were very even, and neither goalkeeper was tested as the two sides tentatively probing away for space in behind the well-organised defences.
We had just started to look the more dangerous side in the moments before the taking the lead. First Ben White had a shot charged down inside the area after neat work from Martin Odegaard and then Bukaya Saka to set up the chance. Alexandre Lacazette was inches away from connecting with a decent whipped in cross from Cedric on the right flank.
From the resulting corner we went ahead. White won the initial header, the ball fell between Lacazette and goalkeeper Jose Sa, where Gabriel was lurking to stab home from close range.
The Wolves players were appealing for a foul on the goalkeeper, but referee Michael Oliver saw nothing wrong, and the goal stood.
Saka created another for Lacazette moments after that, but the striker’s shot was straight at Sa.
Wolves improved after falling behind, but without seriously troubling Aaron Ramsdale.
There was little between the sides in the second half too, but we looked to be in control, even if we were coming under more pressure.
That was until two yellow cards with a matter of seconds for Gabriel Martinelli reduced us to ten men for the last quarter of the game. They were both for pushes – Michael Oliver allowing play to continue after the first, only to stop play seconds later to issue two cards following a second push to bundle over Chinquinho.
Wolves had the ball in the net from the resulting free-kick, but it was ruled out for offside.
Lacazette had a glorious chance to double our lead shortly afterwards, but curled wide when through on goal.
Ramsdale made a flying stop to turn over Roman Saiss’s effort as the hosts came back with renewed ambition.
As the pressure ramped up, Rob Holding cleared off the line and Raul Jimenez had a header saved.
Subsititute Holding was called on several times in the closing stages, but the whole backline played their part in what felt like a huge win at Molineux.

A sickening injury-time goal deprived 10-man Arsenal of taking anything from a highly-charged New Year’s Day clash against City at the Emirates.
Bukayo Saka fired us ahead during a superb first-half display, but the game was completely turned on its head during a crazy five-minute spell after the interval.
Manchester City were awarded a controversial penalty, Gabriel Martinelli missed an open goal and Gabriel was sent off, all in the space of a few minutes, and in the end our defensive efforts against 11 men were in vain when Rodri scrambled home in injury time.
Looking for our first league win over Manchester City since 2015, we set about the task from the first whistle, and were on top during the first half.
We had conceded inside the opening quarter of an hour in each of our previous five home Premier League meetings with City, but we gave as good as we got in the first 15 minutes this time – and more.
But the first chances went to the visitors. Gabriel made a crucial tackle to deny Raheem Sterling inside the box before Gabriel Jesus headed wide.
We were seeing plenty of the ball though and had a very strong penalty appeal turned down by referee Stuart Attwell, who was centre of attention for much of the afternoon, when Ederson appeared to trip Martin Odegaard in the box.
Some wonderful work from Thomas Partey – dominant in the middle of the pitch – created a chance for Gabriel Martinelli, only for his shot from a tight angle to be blocked.
Of course City’s forward players were a constant danger, but we were looking the more likely scorers, and just after the half hour we got our reward.
A fine passing movement began with Ben White stepping in to win the ball, then moving it quickly to Partey, to Odegaard then to Kieran Tierney. The full back rolled his pass across the box and Saka finished superbly first time into the bottom corner.
Another rapid passing move stretched the opponents out of shape, resulting in Martinelli curling just over from 20 yards, with the keeper beaten.
Just before the interval the Brazilian again went close, with an effort that would have been a goal of the season contender had it nestled in the net. Picking the ball up in the left flank, he ran at the City defence, in to the box, then poking a shot just wide when he looked to have been crowded out.
Then the game flipped completely in a five-minute spell early in the second half.
And it was a controversial moment ten minutes into the second half that brought the champions level. Bernado Silva went down inside the area under the challenge of Granit Xhaka. The referee was well placed and waved away the initial appeals, but after consulting VAR, the spot kick was given.
Riyad Mahrez stepped up and converted from 12 yards to make it 1-1.
We could have been back ahead instantly, only for Nathan Ake to clear off his own line from an overhit backpass, and Martinelli missed the follow up with the goal at his mercy.
It would get worse seconds later. Gabriel – booked for protesting the penalty award – was then sent off for a foul on the halfway line.
The momentum had completely changed in the space of a few minutes.
With Mikel Arteta at home, isolating after testing positive for covid, his assistant Albert Stuivenberg took over on the touchline ,and he had to make several adjustments to deal with the numerical disadvantage.
City obviously monopolised possession from that point on, but the defence stood firm, the midfield looked organised, and our forward players ran their socks off.
It all came to nothing though, when Rodri poked home from close range at the death.
A hard result to take, certainly, but much pride to be taken from the performance.

We won our fourth Premier League match on the bounce – five in all competitions – with a comprehensive victory at Norwich on Boxing Day.
In a match we dominated for large parts, Bukayo Saka scored once in each half, sandwiched by a fine Kieran Tierney strike and an Alex Lacazette penalty and Emile Smith Rowe’s injury-time strike ensured we moved to within three points of third-placed Chelsea.
Having been hit with a spate of Covid absences, Mikel Arteta had to shuffle his pack and with no fit specialised right back, Ben White moved across and Rob Holding came into the heart of the defence.
Our recent fine form had given us confidence to attack the Premier League’s bottom club right from the off, and it only took us six minutes to open the scoring.
Martin Odegaard – outstanding in recent weeks – was once again at the heart of it, receiving the ball in the box after good work from Gabriel Martinelli and Lacazette, and feeding Saka to sweep home.
We continued to press forward and Lacazette had a good chance to double our advantage but miscued a header wide from close range, while Saka and then Martinelli also tried their luck.
Two minutes before the interval we finally made our pressure count as Odegaard picked out the onrushing Kieran Tierney in plenty of space on the left, and the Scotland international raced into the box and found the far corner.
We continued to dominate after the restart and thought we had a third when Martinelli’s shot deflected into the far corner – but the Brazilian was flagged for offside.
But we did not have long to wait to extend our lead, Saka collecting the ball on the right of the area, wrapping up Brandon Williams in knots and firing a fierce shot into the far corner.
We were handed the chance to make it four when Lacazette was barged down in the area, and the skipper made no mistake from the spot.
Smith Rowe only on the pitch a matter of minutes wrapped things up in injury time with a close-range finish, capping off a fine win on the road.

Eddie Nketiah scored his first senior hat-trick and Charlie Patino scored on his debut as we sealed our place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a comprehensive victory against Sunderland.
We came into the match in fine form in the competition, having scored 11 times without concession – and Mikel Arteta picked a mix of youth and experience in his line up.
While much of the pre-match talk centred around the inclusion of 18-year-old Charlie Patino in the matchday squad for the first time, the starting XI had a job to do and they set about it instantly.
Within five minutes Nketiah had headed a fine Cedric cross over the bar, and it set a theme as we focused many of our attacks down that flank.
Our Portuguese right back soon found Flo Balogun at the back post with another accurate delivery, but the striker headed wide – and then saw a low shot saved moments later.
Cedric continued to get forward at will into dangerous areas – and he played a key role in our opener, sending in a fine corner that Rob Holding directed towards goal, and while the header was saved, Nketiah was there to force it over the line.
We doubled our advantage not long afterwards, Cedric combining with Nicolas Pepe on the overlaps before cutting the ball back to the Ivorian forward in the area, and his shot flew into the roof of the net. It was a fine way for Pepe to mark his 100th game in our colours.
It was plain sailing at this point, but Sunderland got themselves back into the game with a well-worked move that saw Nathan Broadhead race in behind our defence and beat Bernd Leno.
Our goalkeeper had to be alert a few minutes later to push a goalbound effort from Carl Winchester around the post, and while Emile Smith Rowe went close at the other end there was no further troubling of the scoresheet before the interval.
But just four minutes into the second half we extended our advantage again as Nuno Tavares got into space down the left and delivered a fine cross to the near post, for Nketiah to finish confidently for his second of the night.
The visitors continued to come forward and came close with a curling effort from Elliot Embleton that struck the outside of the post.
Nketah completed his hat-trick in fine style, backheeling home after superb work from Martin Odegaard and Nicolas Pepe.
Patino came on to warm applause as the 886th player to represent the club with 10 minutes remaining, and claimed a fairytale debut goal in injury time as he poked home Pepe’s cross.
It was a fantastic moment, but the night belonged to Nketiah who walked off with the match ball having sealed our place in the semi-finals.

A thoroughly dominant first-half performance laid the platform for an excellent away win at Leeds.
Gabriel Martinelli netted twice and Bukayo Saka was also on target in a mesmerising opening 45 minutes, in which we mustered 11 shots on target – the most in a single half of Premier League football since 2003/04.
Leeds rallied briefly in the second half, scoring from the penalty spot, but Emile Smith Rowe came off the bench to net his seventh Premier League goal of the season late on to seal the three points.
There were signs of what was to come from the very first whistle. We had three very good chances within moments of kick off.
Martin Odegaard found Alexandre Lacazette with a fantastic throughball, but the Leeds keeper Illan Meslier was down well to deny him when one on one. The rebound was prodded wide by Saka and with our next attack Thomas Partey saw his shot turned away at the near post.
It was a bright start full of intent and ambition, with Kieran Tierney next to test the keeper with a right-footed strike.
That was all in the first five minutes, and the game settled down until Martinelli lashed us into the lead.
The Leeds defence hesitated, appealing for a foul by Lacazette, but referee Andre Marriner waved play on, and crucially Martinelli remained alert, to smash the ball home. VAR also saw nothing untoward with the strike.
The goal brought up a milestone for the Gunners – it was our 7,000th scored in the top-flight of English football, becoming the third side to the landmark, after Everton and Liverpool. Our first came some 117 years ago.
Leeds, severely depleted with injury and missing nine players, were still full of running, and nearly brought themselves level when Raphinha wriggled past Tierney and shot just wide with Aaron Ramsdale wrong-footed.
We continued to make chances though, and soon doubled our lead. This time Granit Xhaka released Martinelli through the middle, and the 20-year-old forward kept his composure, bore down on goal, and lifted a wonderful finish over Meslier.
It was no more than we deserved after an excellent start.
We were swarming around the Leeds defence, and Lacazette was next to go close, forcing another save from Meslier after great build up play involving Saka and Odegaard.
Saka increased the lead just before half-time, his shot was deflected in past the keeper, after just about beating the offside trap.
The only surprise is that we weren’t leading by more at the interval.
Leeds were in no mood to lay down though, and cheered on by the Elland Road faithful, came out fired up for the second half.
A clumsy challenge from Ben White inside the area gave them a route back into the game when Raphinha fired home the resulting penalty. More than a quarter of an hour remaining and all of a sudden it was game on again.
The hosts’ tails were up, but a thumping finish from substitute Smith Rowe restored our three-goal advantage.
Odegaard pounced on a loose ball and weighted his pass into the advancing Smith Rowe, and the England man made no mistake with his first-time finish.
It sealed an excellent away win – our first since beating Leicester in October – and consolidated our place in the top four going in to Christmas.
