We were beaten on the road at Manchester United on Thursday night after a topsy-turvey game ultimately went the way of the home side.
Unbeaten in our last three visits to Old Trafford prior to this clash, we started on the front foot, zipping the ball about and keeping the hosts at arm’s length.
Having come close with an in-swinging corner that caused chaos within the first minute, we eventually made our set piece prowess count for the opening goal – but it was not without a hint of controversy.
That arose because when the ball was delivered into the box, United midfielder Fred stepped on David de Gea’s ankle and the goalkeeper went down. The loose ball fell to Emile Smith Rowe, and he finished smartly.
Cue mass confusion. It had to be a goal didn’t it, as no Arsenal player was involved in the clash with De Gea? Eventually after much debate, the goal was given and our fine start had its reward.
But after that we were pushed back by the hosts, who although not at their best, were causing problems – and eventually they found their equaliser just before the interval, Bruno Fernandes poking home from close range.
We started the second half on the front foot and Gabriel’s header soon brought a good save from De Gea, while at the other end Aaron Ramsdale had to be alert to deny Cristiano Ronaldo.
But the Portuguese wouldn’t be denied and minutes later he converted from Marcus Rashford’s cross to put the hosts in front.
But back we came, and an incredibly open start to the second half soon had another goal as Partey picked out Martinelli on the right, and his cross found Martin Odegaard and the Norwegian found the corner with a pinpoint strike to equalise.
The game remained open with Aubameyang having half a chance with a fierce drive that De Gea saved, but at the other end a tangle between Odegaard and Fred ended in a penalty for the hosts – and Ronaldo made no mistake from the spot.
We pushed and pushed to claw our way back into the match once more, but there was to be no late equaliser and we ended empty-handed from a frustrating night.

Two beautifully crafted second-half goals fired us back to winning ways at home to Newcastle.
Bukayo Saka broke the deadlock after the interval, finishing smartly after he, Emile Smith Rowe and Nuno Tavares combined well to open up the space.
Ten minutes later substitute Gabriel Martinelli sealed the win, showing a deft touch to volley home Takehiro Tomiyasu’s cross just moments after coming on.
It was no more than we deserved for a dominant display – Mikel Arteta’s men enjoyed nearly 70 per cent of possession – but in truth the first half was played at a pedestrian pace in the main, with neither side really taking control of the game.
Saka had our first sight of goal, stretching to connect with a deep, searching pass from Sambi Lokonga, and shooting just wide.
Aaron Ramsdale pulled off a now customary, eye-catching save on the half hour, springing away high to his left to push a Jonjo Shelvey drive on to the crossbar and over.
That seemed to spark us into action at least, and we should have taken the lead moments later. Smith Rowe’s header from 10 yards out was parried by Martin Dubravka, the ball fell to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the far post, but the skipper’s snap shot hit the upright from close range.
Tavares, keeping his place at left back ahead of Kieran Tierney, was never afraid to shoot when the opportunity presented itself, but his radar was off, and only two of our 12 shots in the first half were on target.
Our first effort of the second half was on target, but Saka didn’t put enough power behind it, after doing so well to work his way into a shooting position in the box.
He made sure with his next effort though, and it was a wonderful team move that created the chance.
Arsenal were patiently moving the ball outside the area, drawing Newcastle out of position, before Emile Smith Rowe fed the ball into Tavares and the full back’s clever pass released Saka, who unerringly found the far corner with his left foot.
Saka was soon withdrawn but his replacement Gabriel Martinelli wasted no time in announcing his presence on the pitch, doubling our lead with a wonderful finish.
Takehiro Tomiyasu floated the ball in to the box and the Brazilian forward beautifully cushioned his volley over Dubravka into the net.
It was a breathtaking way for the youngster to score his first of the season, just 93 seconds after coming on.
We kept attacking, looking for the third, and racked up 23 shots by full-time, but in the end were content with a two-goal win, a sixth Premier League clean sheet of the season, and three points that keep us in fifth place.

We conceded a late, late goal to slip to defeat at Everton on Monday night.
Martin Odegaard gave us the lead on the stroke of half time, but the hosts levelled up the scores when Richarlison – who had seen two goals ruled out for offside – headed in.
Eddie Nketiah had a golden chance to put us back in front but hit the post, and deep intom stoppage time Demarai Gray curled in the winner from the edge of the box.
In truth, until a flurry of activity before the interval, the first half had little of any note to report other than a incident that saw Ben Godfrey boot end up in Takehiro Tomiyasu’s face.
The challenge was reviewed by VAR, but surprisingly no action was taken against the Everton man.
We were struggling to get going, and a passive display looked set to be punished when Richarlison headed in for the hosts in the 43rd minute – only to be ruled out for offside.
We took full advantage of that let-off when, seconds before the whistle Kieran Tierney – back in the team for the first time since October 18 – whipped a fine delivery in from the left and Odegaard volleyed in our opener.
It was a huge fillip just before half-time after a low-key performance, and after the restart we had another stroke of luck as Richarlison thought he had equalised – but once again it was disallowed for offside.
Back we came, and moments later Odegaard played in Gabriel Martinelli, who went round Jordan Pickford but was forced wide and his cross-cum-shot hit the top of the net.
The game became fragmented as the clock wound down, much to the frustration of the the home crowd – but eventually the hosts equalised as Gray’s curler hit the bar, and Richarlison headed in on the rebound.
We had to try to win this game all over again, and came so close to regaining the lead when Bukayo Saka stood an inviting cross up to the back post to the onrushing Eddie Nketiah, but the striker hit the post from close range.
Odegaard had a half chance as the game entered injury time, but his shot was blocked inside the area – but right at the death the hosts nicked it as Gray fired in from 20 yards.
