HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs Brighton (1-2) | Premier League | Odegaard

We fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Brighton on Saturday at Emirates Stadium, with goals from Leandro Trossard and Enock Mwepu handing The Seagulls all three points despite a wonder-goal from Martin Odegaard late on.

After defeat last time out to Crystal Place and injuries to key players, it was crucial we got off to a good start against Brighton in north London, but it wasn’t to be.

Chances were few and far between for the Gunners in the opening exchanges, with Bukayo Saka’s back-post cross to Gabriel Magalhaes representing our best move in the first 25 minutes.

Three minutes later, though, we were behind. Brighton played a long clearance upfield into the right-hand channel towards Mwepu who picked out Trossard inside the box. The 27-year-old forward only needed a touch to bend the ball past Aaron Ramsdale and into the top corner to give Graham Potter’s side the advantage.

We upped the tempo after falling behind as we looked to get back on level terms. Granit Xhaka slid in Emile Smith Rowe as our No. 10 went in search of his 11th goal this season, but with the angle tight, his shot couldn’t beat Robert Sanchez at the near-post.

As the half drew to a close, we fashioned our best moment. Bukayo Saka’s late corner picked out Gabriel at the far post whose towering header found Gabriel Martinelli unmarked on the goal line. Our young Brazillian duly headed in to level the scores, but after a lengthy VAR review, it was ruled out for offside.

We looked a different side after the break, with Cedric’s blocked free-kick the result of a renewed spirit following the restart. A period of domination followed, but tenacious work from Brighton at the back kept the busy Smith Rowe and Odegaard at bay.

Mikel Arteta was soon forced to turn to his bench as the clock ticked past the hour mark with Smith Rowe making way for Eddie Nketiah upfront.

We kept on coming as Saka’s driven effort blazed over the bar, before there was to be further anguish for Mikel Arteta’s side. Brighton worked a rare spell of second-half possession into a good chance. Moises Caicedo pulled it back to Mwepu on the edge of the box, who smashed it beyond the outstretched right-hand hand of Ramsdale to double the visitors’ lead in the 67th-minute.

The final few minutes of the game burst into life as Martin Odegaard’s late free-kick was parried into the path of Nketiah who hit the bar from close range. Odegaard then picked the ball up moments later and fired into the top corner from 25-yards to get us back into the contest.

With six added minutes, we pushed and pushed but couldn’t quite find enough to level the game.

The final whistle was greeted with disappointment from the N5 faithful, as we were forced to leave the game empty-handed once again in the Premier League.

HIGHLIGHTS | Crystal Palace vs Arsenal (3-0) | Premier League

We were well beaten at Selhurst Park on Monday night to dent our hopes of a top four finish.

We were never really at the races in south London, and found ourselves two goals down midway through the first half.

Mikel Arteta made some attacking changes in the second half and we at last began to create chances, but Wilfried Zaha won and scored a penalty on the break to seal our fate.

It had been a scrappy opening 15 minutes or so before the hosts took the lead with a header from a free-kick. Joachim Anderson won the initial header back across goal and Jean-Philippe Mateta was all alone to nod the ball in.

In the main we have been excellent at defending set pieces situations so far this season, but we were at fault here.

Less than 10 minutes later we fell further behind. Jordan Ayew took a wonderful pass in his stride then curled home a finish beyond the diving Aaron Ramsdale for 2-0.

The hosts were well on top by now, and we didn’t muster our first attempt on goal until the half hour mark, when Alexandre Lacazette tamely headed over from Bukayo Saka’s cross.

Mikel Arteta made a bold change at half-time, bringing Gabriel Martinelli on for Nuno Tavares, and moving Granit Xhaka back to left back.

We needed to change our approach as well as the personnel though – and early in the second half Saka beat his man and drove into the area before being crowded out.

Emile Smith Rowe was presented with a good chance after an exchange of passes between Martinelli and Lacazette, but his shot lacked power.

Martin Odegaard had the next chance, but screwed a shot just wide from a decent position after being found by Eddie Nketiah.

Our best two chances of the game had come and gone. And we were swiftly punished.

Wilfried Zaha led a counter attack and was brought down in the area by Martin Odegaard. He stepped up and scored the spot kick himself.

Thomas Partey had lost possession on the halfway line to trigger the attack, and picked up an injury in the process. He was replaced by Sambi Lokonga.

Smith Rowe fired an effort goalwards as we continued to strive for a goal, but his fierce shot was blocked on the line by Marc Guehi.

Nketiah struck the bar with a dipping effort from 20 yards, but there would be nothing for the travelling Arsenal fans to cheer on the night.

  • HIGHLIGHTS | Aston Villa vs Arsenal (0-1) | Premier League | SAKA STRIKES!

HIGHLIGHTS | Aston Villa vs Arsenal (0-1) | Premier League | SAKA STRIKES!

Bukayo Saka’s first half goal was enough to give us all three points at Villa Park and strengthen our hold on fourth place.

It was a very professional performance from start to finish, restricting Villa to just one shot on target – which was in fact the last kick of the game.

We started the game very strongly too, playing mostly in the Villa half, and creating a few early chances.

Bukayo Saka was coming out on top of his duel with Ashley Young, and his cross in the first ten minutes was nearly turned in for an own goal by Ezri Konsa, but former Gunner Emiliano Martinez got down to make the save.

Emile Smith Rowe, back in the side for Gabriel Martinelli who’s suffering with illness, shot over from the edge of the area from Martin Odegaard’s pass.

But just before the half hour we scored the goal that our start merited. A quick free kick on the right was played to Cedric. His deep cross was cleared to the edge of the area, where Saka smashed the ball back through a crowded area and beyond Martinez.

It was the 2,000th goal Arsenal have scored in Premier League history, and Saka’s 10th in all competitions this season.

Saka was on the receiving end of a late Tyrone Mings challenge shortly afterwards, and the Villa captain was perhaps lucky to stay on the pitch.

Bernd Leno, in for the injured Aaron Ramsdale didn’t have a shot to save in the first half, on his first Premier League appearance since August.

In fact there was an hour on the clock before the hosts had a shot of any type – John McGinn curled one just wide from 20 yards.

There were signs though, that Villa were growing into the game slowly. Douglas Luiz fired a free-kick over the bar and Ollie Watkins hit the base of the post with a deflected shot.

Arsenal meanwhile, were looking to take the sting out of the game and keep possession in midfield. One such passage of possession play led to a chance for Lacazette on the edge of the area, but his shot was blocked.

Danny Ings, on as a late substitute, looped a header over late on as Villa piled on more pressure.

Coutinho had a free-kick deep into injury time pushed away by Leno, and the visiting fans could celebrate at the final whistle.

  • HIGHLIGHTS | Watford vs Arsenal (2-3) | Premier League | Saka, Gabi & Odegaard!

HIGHLIGHTS | Watford vs Arsenal (2-3) | Premier League | Saka, Gabi & Odegaard!

We moved into the top four with a hard-fought win at Watford on Sunday in a rollercoaster of a game at Vicarage Road.

After the drama of our last Premier League clash some 10 days earlier against Wolves, Mikel Arteta would have been after a more serene affair this time around.

But his heart would have been in his mouth when, 19 seconds into the match, Emmanuel Dennis raced behind our defence and beat Aaron Ramsdale to seemingly open the scoring. The assistant referee’s flag spared us from an early concession though.

But a blockbuster opening to the match saw us take the lead minutes later as a slick move up the right saw the superb Martin Odegaard flick the ball to Bukayo Saka. Our England international raced up the right and picked out Odegaard, who took a touch before finding the far corner for his fifth goal of the campaign.

But our lead did not last long as the Hornets stung us with a sharp move up the right, with Kiko Femenia crossing for Cucho Hernandez to send a brilliant overhead kick past Ramsdale – and this time it did count.

We weren’t at our very best in the first half, but regained the lead when fine work by Saka to steal the ball in front of the Watford box saw his then find Alex Lacazette in the area. The captain did what he does best, holding off Craig Cathcart before playing it back to Saka to curl the ball high into the roof of the net.

We couldn’t add to our lead before the interval, but after half time we opened up a two goal advantage in clinical circumstances.

Credit to Saka, who took a quick throw to release Cedric up the right and he found Lacazette on the edge of the area, he then laid it off to Gabriel Martinelli and the Brazilian found the top corner with a fine first-time effort.

The game still had plenty of life still in it, and the hosts soon had a penalty shout waved away, with Moussa Sissoko and Tom Cleverley in quick succession.

Lacazette then had an opportunity to extend our lead after good work from Odegaard but fired wide, while Ben White skewed a volley wide when well placed.

Dennis had a big chance to pull one back for Watford in the closing stages but scuffed his shot with the goal gaping.

We kept pushing to kill off the game, and Eddie Nketiah – on for a matter of moments – nearly did just that but hit the post after a rapid counter attack.

But Roy Hodgson’s side added another twist when Sissoko forced the ball home from a tight angle, setting up a grandstand finish.

But despite a tense finale, we held on for the three points in another vital victory in the hunt for a top-four finish.

HIGHLIGHTS | Wolves vs Arsenal (0-1) | Premier League | Gabriel grabs Gunners winner

Gabriel’s first half goal was enough to give ten-man Arsenal a potentially crucial win at Wolves.

The defender ended our four-game scoreless streak with a close range finish from a corner, but the hard work was done after we were reduced to ten min 20 minutes from time.

Gabriel Martinelli was the man dismissed, for two identical offences within the space of a few seconds.

But after that our defence stood firm in the face of sustained pressure from the home side, and earned a victory to move us up to fifth place in the league.

The opening 20 minutes were very even, and neither goalkeeper was tested as the two sides tentatively probing away for space in behind the well-organised defences.

We had just started to look the more dangerous side in the moments before the taking the lead. First Ben White had a shot charged down inside the area after neat work from Martin Odegaard and then Bukaya Saka to set up the chance. Alexandre Lacazette was inches away from connecting with a decent whipped in cross from Cedric on the right flank.

From the resulting corner we went ahead. White won the initial header, the ball fell between Lacazette and goalkeeper Jose Sa, where Gabriel was lurking to stab home from close range.

The Wolves players were appealing for a foul on the goalkeeper, but referee Michael Oliver saw nothing wrong, and the goal stood.

Saka created another for Lacazette moments after that, but the striker’s shot was straight at Sa.

Wolves improved after falling behind, but without seriously troubling Aaron Ramsdale.

There was little between the sides in the second half too, but we looked to be in control, even if we were coming under more pressure.

That was until two yellow cards with a matter of seconds for Gabriel Martinelli reduced us to ten men for the last quarter of the game. They were both for pushes – Michael Oliver allowing play to continue after the first, only to stop play seconds later to issue two cards following a second push to bundle over Chinquinho.

Wolves had the ball in the net from the resulting free-kick, but it was ruled out for offside.

Lacazette had a glorious chance to double our lead shortly afterwards, but curled wide when through on goal.

Ramsdale made a flying stop to turn over Roman Saiss’s effort as the hosts came back with renewed ambition.

As the pressure ramped up, Rob Holding cleared off the line and Raul Jimenez had a header saved.

Subsititute Holding was called on several times in the closing stages, but the whole backline played their part in what felt like a huge win at Molineux.

  • HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs Manchester City (1-2) | Premier League

HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs Manchester City (1-2) | Premier League

A sickening injury-time goal deprived 10-man Arsenal of taking anything from a highly-charged New Year’s Day clash against City at the Emirates.

Bukayo Saka fired us ahead during a superb first-half display, but the game was completely turned on its head during a crazy five-minute spell after the interval.

Manchester City were awarded a controversial penalty, Gabriel Martinelli missed an open goal and Gabriel was sent off, all in the space of a few minutes, and in the end our defensive efforts against 11 men were in vain when Rodri scrambled home in injury time.

Looking for our first league win over Manchester City since 2015, we set about the task from the first whistle, and were on top during the first half.

We had conceded inside the opening quarter of an hour in each of our previous five home Premier League meetings with City, but we gave as good as we got in the first 15 minutes this time – and more.

But the first chances went to the visitors. Gabriel made a crucial tackle to deny Raheem Sterling inside the box before Gabriel Jesus headed wide.

We were seeing plenty of the ball though and had a very strong penalty appeal turned down by referee Stuart Attwell, who was centre of attention for much of the afternoon, when Ederson appeared to trip Martin Odegaard in the box.

Some wonderful work from Thomas Partey – dominant in the middle of the pitch – created a chance for Gabriel Martinelli, only for his shot from a tight angle to be blocked.

Of course City’s forward players were a constant danger, but we were looking the more likely scorers, and just after the half hour we got our reward.

A fine passing movement began with Ben White stepping in to win the ball, then moving it quickly to Partey, to Odegaard then to Kieran Tierney. The full back rolled his pass across the box and Saka finished superbly first time into the bottom corner.

Another rapid passing move stretched the opponents out of shape, resulting in Martinelli curling just over from 20 yards, with the keeper beaten.

Just before the interval the Brazilian again went close, with an effort that would have been a goal of the season contender had it nestled in the net. Picking the ball up in the left flank, he ran at the City defence, in to the box, then poking a shot just wide when he looked to have been crowded out.

Then the game flipped completely in a five-minute spell early in the second half.

And it was a controversial moment ten minutes into the second half that brought the champions level. Bernado Silva went down inside the area under the challenge of Granit Xhaka. The referee was well placed and waved away the initial appeals, but after consulting VAR, the spot kick was given.

Riyad Mahrez stepped up and converted from 12 yards to make it 1-1.

We could have been back ahead instantly, only for Nathan Ake to clear off his own line from an overhit backpass, and Martinelli missed the follow up with the goal at his mercy.

It would get worse seconds later. Gabriel – booked for protesting the penalty award – was then sent off for a foul on the halfway line.

The momentum had completely changed in the space of a few minutes.

With Mikel Arteta at home, isolating after testing positive for covid, his assistant Albert Stuivenberg took over on the touchline ,and he had to make several adjustments to deal with the numerical disadvantage.

City obviously monopolised possession from that point on, but the defence stood firm, the midfield looked organised, and our forward players ran their socks off.

It all came to nothing though, when Rodri poked home from close range at the death.

A hard result to take, certainly, but much pride to be taken from the performance.
