HIGHLIGHTS | West Ham vs Arsenal (1-2) | Premier League | Rob Holding, Gabriel Magalhaes

Goals from both centre-halves gave us a battling, huge victory in the chase for Champions League qualification, and secured a top-six finish in the process.

Rob Holding’s first-ever Premier League goal gave us the lead in the first half, only for the hosts to cancel it out just before half-time.

But Gabriel’s header at the far post in the second half was enough to clinch all three points and keep us in fourth place.

After a fairly quiet opening half hour, in which neither goalkeeper was properly tested, it was Holding – in the side for the injured Ben White – who broke the deadlock.

Eddie Nketiah had earned a corner after a run and shot that Lukasz Fabianski got down well to turn wide. Bukayo Saka floated in a dangerous corner, and Holding rose highest to head in off the post.

It was his first-ever goal in the Premier League – on his 81st appearance – and it breathed life into a game that hadn’t really got going until then.

We failed to build on the lead though, and West Ham came roaring back.

Aaron Ramsdale immediately made a fine save to deny Declan Rice at the near post, but we could not hold out until half-time.

Vladimir Coufal was afforded time and space on the right flank to pick out Jarrod Bowen, who took a touch before firing past Ramsdale, via a slight deflection off Gabriel.

Early in the second half there was a real heart in mouth moment when Ramsdale came tearing out of his box to meet the ball ahead of Bowen. The West Ham man went tumbling, but the decision went our way, with Bowen booked for simulation.

Shortly afterwards we retook the lead. Another inswinging corner caused problems, the ball was half cleared to Gabriel Martinelli and he crossed for compatriot Gabriel to head in from close range.

As the game entered the final 20 minutes we had a glorious chance to score the third. Mohamed Elneny spotted Nketiah’s run from deep and released him with a long pass. The striker shifted it past Kurt Zouma, onto his right foot, but placed his shot just wide from 20 yards.

The hard-working Nketiah had another chance from similar range soon afterwards, but this time Fabianski got down to save well.

Sambi Lokonga blazed a shot over late on, but it didn’t matter. The work had been done, and victory was savoured at the end by the vociferous travelling fans.

European football for next season is assured – now to make sure it’s in the Champions League.

  • HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs West Ham (2-0) | Premier League | Martinelli, Smith Rowe

HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs West Ham (2-0) | Premier League | Martinelli, Smith Rowe

We moved into the top four on Wednesday after goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Emile Smith Rowe wrapped up an impressive win against West Ham United.

Having cruised past Southampton last time out, it was no surprise to see Mikel Arteta name an unchanged side as we looked to build on the momentum we built up there.

We certainly came flying out of the blocks, the intensity shown the team only matched by that of the fans in a packed Emirates Stadium.

But in a first half of few clear-cut chances, we posed the more threat – although it was West Ham who first went close as Pablo Fornals bent one just past the post from the edge of the box.

Just before the interval though, as we sought to crank up the pressure, we pieced together a lovely flowing move involving Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka, before Granit Xhaka’s shot was blocked.

The ball was cleared to the edge of the Hammers’ area, and Kieran Tierney took aim with a stunning strike that Lukasz Fabianski pushed on to the bar and over.

Moments later Alex Lacazette forced the former Gunner into action once more with a curling effort, but the breakthrough just wouldn’t come as the goalkeeper saved smartly.

After the restart, we stayed on the front foot and took the lead when the influential Lacazette played in Martinelli behind the backline and he curled the ball into the far corner.

It was some finish – and the crowd loved every second of it.

West Ham soon came back at us, with Aaron Ramsdale forced into a smart save from Jarrod Bowen just a few short minutes later, but it was only fleeting as we continued to control the tempo of the game.

We were handed a golden chance to extend our lead when Lacazette was taken down in the area by Vladimir Coufal – a challenge that led to the defender’s red card for a second bookable offence – but our striker’s resulting penalty was saved.

It made for a slightly nervier finale than perhaps our overall performance deserved.

Gabriel hooked a half chance wide, Saka saw a shot blocked on the line and then Smith Rowe called Fabianski into action as we kept the pressure on.

We finally removed any doubt about who would take the three points when Saka raced upfield and found Smith Rowe, and the England international arrowed a shot into the bottom corner.

It sealed a fine evening’s work in N5 as we moved into fourth spot.

  • HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs Southampton (3-0) | Premier League | Lacazette, Odegaard, Gabriel

HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs Southampton (3-0) | Premier League | Lacazette, Odegaard, Gabriel

After weathering an early storm, the Gunners turned on the style to see off Southampton at the Emirates.

Alexandre Lacazette, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel were all on target, while Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli both hit the post, but there was little to suggest that was in store after we were pinned back in the first 15 minutes.

The visitors forced Aaron Ramsdale in to three stops in that opening quarter of an hour, the best of which was from Adam Armstrong when the striker found space inside the penalty area.

In truth we were struggling to get out of our own half at all at that stage, as the wintry rain tumbled down in north London.

But then, against the run of play, we suddenly woke up and took the lead with a goal of real quality.

Despite the pressure we had found ourselves under, we played out bravely and swiftly from the back, creating the opening with some quick one-touch passing before Bukayo Saka was released on the right wing. His cut back was met powerfully first time by skipper Lacazette to thunder the ball into the net.

There was 16 passes in the move, and the goal breathed life in to our performance at last. Six minutes later we doubled the lead. Takehiro Tomiyasu’s deep cross was controlled by Kieran Tierney, whose own cross was blocked. But the full back was alert enough to head the rebound into the middle where Martin Odegaard nodded the ball home from close range.

It was the Norwegian’s third goal in three games, and all of a sudden, despite our sub par start, we were two goals to the good.

Lacazette then had a chance when he was sent through by Martinelli, but the striker was dispossessed inside the area when bearing down on goal.

Late in the half Laca was through on goal again, dancing his way into the box, but again couldn’t get his shot away on time.

The chances continued to come. Odegaard’s excellent backheel set up Saka inside the area, but 40-year-old keeper Willy Caballero – making his Saints debut – made himself big to deny him.

We were well on top by now, and finished the half with another chance for Gabriel Martinelli – set up by a superb goal kick from Ramsdale.

Granit Xhaka and Odegaard had shots off target early in the second half, and Gabriel had a goal disallowed for offside after he thought he had bundled home from close range.

It didn’t matter, because only moments later he did score a legitimate goal, powering home a header from Martinelli’s in-swinging corner.

We were in control now and could have scored three or four more in a five-minute burst. First Martinelli curled against the post from 20 yards before Odegaard had an effort blocked, and Takehiro Tomiyasu – impressive all afternoon – forced a good low save with his header from a corner.

Then Bukayo Saka struck the other upright after good work in the box, with Caballero well beaten.

To their credit though Southampton didn’t crumble. Nathan Redmond tested Ramsdale with a rising shot in the area, then Tella brought a full-stretch stop from the keeper.

Saka shot just wide after a neat one-two wide Odegaard late on, but we had done enough to record a fifth consecutive home win in all competitions, and fourth successive clean sheet at the Emirates.
