Having won last season’s edition, Manchester United FC lead the entries for the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League, which will conclude on Wednesday 27 May 2009 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome; the question that rises is «can they repeat?»

Last season Manchester United could say they questionable had their best season for an extensive, lengthy time. Cristiano Ronaldo (Premier League top scorer and World player of the year) and Wayne Rooney helped win two big titles, the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. Both made millions of Euros.

The question this year will be in what order the ‘big four’ will be positioned. Can any team break into the elite group of clubs that are dominating English football? I will say it is possible!! Looking further down the league; can the newly promoted teams survive in the Premier League? Why not! They are prepared already.

Look at the ‘big four’. Manchester United has not brought any new bodies in (not that they need) but have lost someone significant, Tony Coton. Why will Coton be missed? Simple, best goalkeeping coach Manchester United has ever had and despite the fact the knee injury retired him for good, he will be someone to look for advice in a future.

Man Utd has survived the ‘Ronaldo saga’ and live to fight another day. All in all it has been a quiet summer for Manchester United. Alex Ferguson has said over the last few days that he hopes to sign an elite player soon (the name Robinho keeps popping in my head).

I don’t like to predict, but would expect Man Utd to be in the top two or I can foresee the future and say injuries could play a roll. Why? Well, besides the fact that this championship is being played in a «battle field» any injuries to key men like Ronaldo, Rooney or Tevez may mean they could struggle to score goals, has happened before; this was a problem that did occur at times last season, but like earlier mentioned, Ferguson is tracking a striker and this could put an end to any apparent flaw in the squad.

Now, how much is Chelsea willing to risk winning this year? Well, Scolari, Deco, Porto… need I say more? Of course I do, what about the dramatic change in tactics. Chelsea is going all the way, so don’t be surprised to see them playing another UEFA final game against Manchester United once again. Maybe you are wondering «will Chelsea focus more on the Champions League instead of the Premier League?» That sort of rational could ambition the title near Manchester.

Manchester United is with no doubt on top of the pile, not only locally, but on the European front. The current crop of players is certainly the finest manager Sir. Alex Ferguson has had at his retention in his twenty-two year influence, but who of the pretenders can make a strong claim as being genuine contenders this season? Will the ‘Big Four’ charge further away, or can others shorten the gap?

QPR are set to host league leaders Manchester City at Loftus Road, in match week 11, of the Premier League, on Saturday, November 5, 2011.

QPR were beaten 3-1 in match week 10, by Tottenham. Gareth Bale gave Spurs the lead on 20 minutes, and Van der Vaart helped double it, 13 minutes later. Bothroyd reduced the margin on 62 minutes but Spurs had the last laugh when Bale scored his second goal, 10 minutes later. Playing away, QPR did well enough to cause some worries to the home team, especially at 2-1. But in the end, they lost to a better team, and they would take consolation from the fight they gave the White Hart squad. Bothroyd’s goal for QPR resulted when Joey Barton’s corner kick was sent back across the box by a Helguson header, and Bothroyd nodded home from three yards.

Man City continued their imperious march towards what could be their first Premier League title, beating Wolves 3-1, at the Etihad, in match week 10. The visitors kept the home team at bay during the first half but City came out aggressively after the interval and the pressure on the Wolves defence paid off when Dzeko struck on 52 minutes, to give Mancini’s men the lead. Fifteen minutes later, Kolarov made it 2-0 and even a sending off of Kompany and Hunt’s resultant penalty goal for Wolves was not enough. Ten-man City defended well and managed to add a third goal, late into injury time, thereby underscoring the difference in quality, between the sides.

Head to head, the sides have had 12 league meetings in the last 10 years. Of those, QPR have won 5, while Man City have emerged triumphant in 3, with the remaining 4 games ending in stalemates.

After 10 games, this season, QPR are in 12th place, on the Premier League points table, while Man City are at the top, 5 points adrift of runners-up Man United. In 5 home games, QPR have won 1, drawn 3 and lost the remaining game; Man City have won 4 and drawn 1 of their 5 games on the road, this season. Of their last 10 league matches, QPR have won and drawn 3 each, while losing the remaining 4; Man City have won 9 and drawn 1 of their last 10.

Regardless of their good performance thus far, this season, QPR are likely to find themselves out of their depth against a Man City attack that never stops.

Both Bolton Wanderers and Birmingham City have had satisfactory, if not overly brilliant, starts to their Premiership campaigns.

Bolton will host Birmingham at the Reebok Stadium in an early kick off this Sunday, and both  sides would first try to stave off defeat.

A goalless draw against Fulham in their Premier League opener was followed by Bolton’s impressive 3-1 win against West Ham on the second weekend.

Striker Johan Elmander’s brace of goals in the West Ham match bodes well for the Trotters at the start of a long season.

Birmingham finished ninth in last season’s League and that was a pleasant surprise for their supporters.

Scott Damm and Lam Ridgewell scored in a come from behind 2-2 draw in Birmingham’s opening match against Sunderland.

With another come-from-behind performance against Blackburn at st Andrews, the Blues went one better by notching a 2-1 win.

Craig Gardner’s brace on the day made him the stand out performer, and manager Alex McLeish must be justifiably pleased at the promising start by his squad.

Summer signings Nikola Zigic and Ben Foster are also beginning to gel and barring injuries, Birmingham should aim high, this season.

An ankle injury to Gavin McCain is the only injury worry for Bolton ahead of Sunday’s match.

A thigh injury is likely to keep Kevin Phillips out of Birmingahm’s starting eleven.

Stuart Parnaby is recovering well from a hamstring injury, but could need more time before he is match fit.

In last season’s meeting at the Reebok, a 2-1 win saw Bolton prevail.

Ivan Klasnic doubled the score after Kevin Davies nodded home the first.

James Fadden struck to reduce the margin for Birmingham but that turned out to be the last goal of the game, and season, as it were.

For the last 17 years, Liverpool and its fans have been living in the shadows of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea as the trio dominate the English Premiership (EPL). Without a League title to its name for the past 17 years since 1990, this season however may prove to be different.

With the support of new owners Mr Hicks and Mr Gillett, Rafa Benitez has spent wisely over the close season by bringing strength to each of the position. Thus making sure that Liverpool would have at least 2 players to choose from for each of the position. This is important as without strength and quality in depth, the team would be suffer in competitions if injuries started cooping up. Hence with the transfer of Ferando Torres, Andriy Voronin, Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun, Lucas Levia, Sebastian Leto and Charles Itandje into the squad for the 2007-2008 season, Liverpool looks well prepared for the new season.

Upfront, the transfer of Torres in especially is highly anticipated by the fans as the solution to the scoring woes that plague the team for the last few seasons. Thus far, this has proven to be true as all four strikers, Torres, Kuyt, Voronin and Crouch have opening their accounts for Liverpool.

In midfield, finally Benitez has realized the impact of playing Steven Gerrard in the middle of the park and would play the Captain there. And with the additional of Benayoun, Levia, Leto and Babel in, there are many more choices or options for Benitez to choose from. This is also essential as Benitez has set out a team in a match that in his opinion is the best against the opponents.

As for defense, not much changes have been made to the first choice back four of Arbeloa-Agger-Carragher-Finnan and goalkeeper being Reina. So far this season in the league, Liverpool has only conceded 2 goals from penalties. Thus the defense seen sound as always in a Benitez’s team. However only a small concern on the centre backs as if Carragher, Agger or Hypia is out, then there may be a problem as there are no other recognized centre back in the 1st team.

Back to league, another problem for Liverpool over the season is the slow start it had made in the August or September. Reviewing 2006-2007 season, if Liverpool has managed to win more games in the opening two months, then the league race would be much closer. However so far, Liverpool has made an excellent start to season, winning 3 games, drawing 1 and have a game in hand verses West Ham.

The pick of the wins is the 6-0 demolition of Derby County with Torres scoring a brace. What makes it more impressive is that both Carragher and Gerrard were out injured. With that win Liverpool is first in the league for the moment. Next up is Spurs.

If Liverpool can continue this rich vein in form and have no major injury problems, this could well be the year that Liverpool add the EPL title to the 18 it has previously won.

With the World Cup now having been and gone we could have expected an influx of summer performers to the Premier League clubs as has happened following recent World Cups and European Championships. This summer though, movement has been slow. The highest profile move to a Premier League club thus far was the recent announcement that Chelsea’s Joe Cole is transferring to Liverpool. Whilst Cole fits the criteria of a World Cup performer this move was likely to have been initiated before the World Cup and based on reputation rather than World Cup matches.

The financial climate of the Premier League has changed considerably with public records of large leveraged debt at Manchester United and Liverpool, Arsenal have never been traditional big spenders under manager Arsene Wenger and the situation at Chelsea is uncertain but it is clear that Roman Abramovich has slowed his spending in the last two seasons. This leaves Manchester city has the obvious candidates to spend big on World Cup stars whilst Spurs may want to consolidate there new standing as a top four side with some new faces.

With many of the fancied players (Kaka, Messi, Drogba, Rooney, Ronaldo) relatively under performing this summer the World Cup the hottest property is Germany’s Mesut Ozil. The speedy 21 year old is contracted to Bundesliga side Werder Bremen. With Michael Ballack gone from the Chelsea midfield they may see his replacement at International level this summer as the man to fill the gap at Stamford Bridge, however Chelsea interest in a player is likely to stir attention at Manchester City who have so far spent big money on Spain’s David Silva, Germany’s Jerome Boateng and Ivory Coasts Yaya Toure. However Ozil is likely to attract interest from mainland Europe too. Whilst he may not fit into the Barcelona midfield with their interest firmly on Fabregas he may be a target for fellow giants Real Madrid or closer to home Bayern Munich.

Uruguay surprised many this summer with the stand out performers being strikers Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan. Forlan is tried and tested in the Premier League when he found life tough to cope with at Manchester United scoring just 17 goals in near 100 appearances, he may get a second chance with another club if he can be tempted to leave the Spanish league that seems to suit his style of play. Suarez netted a phenomenal 49 goals for Dutch side Ajax and should Ajax manager Martin Jol make the rumoured switch to Fulham then don’t be surprised to see his star striker follow him to Craven Cottage.

World Cup’s gone by have been an opportunity for African players to showcase their talents to the watching football world, however this time around with the exception of Ghana, African performances were subdued so a minority of players are likely to have stirred Premier League interest. Of course, a large majority of Ghana’s squad already feature in European leagues so are likely to carry the inflated price tags that has Premier League chairman running scared of.

So to conclude, a slow start to the transfer window (with the obvious exception of Manchester City) and don’t expect things to change too quickly, it is likely to be a pre-season of consolidation and looking within teams own youth ranks rather than a vast period of recruitment.

Well, you knew it would happen. We’ve got AC Milan vs Man Utd and Inter Milan against Chelsea. This could mean the return of David Beckham to play against the team where he made his name and created so many golden moments in English football.

We’ve also got the brilliant Jose Mourinho against Chelsea. He led them to two league titles an FA Cup and two Leagues Cups before resigning in 2007. For me, this is one of many things that makes football brilliant and it confirms again that the Champions League is one of the best football tournaments in the world.

I’ve got absolutely know idea who’ll win this season, although I am going to give the edge to any of the English teams, as they look stronger and have greater squad depth. Alex Ferguson must be relishing this tie, probably not due to the return of David Beckham, but at the shear fact that he’ll be able to show once again, just how far Man Utd and the English has come.

Jose Mourinho I imagine, will also be looking forward to returning again to Stamford bridge. I always get the sense that he lights up when he returns to Chelsea. One of the other interesting parts of this draw for me will also be Arsene Wengers Arsenal, who I believe to have the skills to all the way. It just depends which Arsenal team turns up on the day. As we all know, on form, they can destroy anyone.
