So, the Champions League draw have been made, and I have to admit one of the most anticipated matches is Inter vs Man Utd. Italian champions vs English champions. I’m an Arsenal fan, so I’m rather happy about it. Man Utd think they are the best, well eat this! Let’s see how you get past Inter.

But there is another fixture I’m very much looking forward to. Roma vs Arsenal. Why? Both are my favourite teams, and they are 2 very similar clubs. Mirror image in other words.

Firstly, both clubs are having some financial problem. Which is the reason why both clubs doesn’t spend big. Look at the players Arsenal and Roma have signed in the past few seasons: While big stars like Cristian Chivu left, instead of getting a big money replacement Luciano Spalleti got Juan for a mere 6.3 million euros. When the legend of Arsenal, Thierry Henry left, many people was thinking whether his replacement could lived up to expectations. Arsene Wenger chose to fork out only 8 million to sign Eduardo Da Silva, and although he’s injured at the moment, his future looks bright.

Secondly, both clubs have been praised for their brilliant attacking football. Arsenal was believed to have played the best football ever seen in England during their Invincibles’ season (2003/04), and up till today they do just that. Roma have been praised by pundits for playing exciting, attacking football since Luciano Spalleti took over and deployed the 4-5-1 formation. Normally in football it’s the beauty vs the beast, but I believe in this match, both clubs will be known as the beauties and will be fighting their asses off.

Lastly, both clubs have their own star talisman of the team. Francesco Totti have always been associated with AS Roma, and up till today the fans still worship him. Francesc Fabregas, although only 21 years of age, has been one of the most popular players in Arsenal at the moment, and seeing how similar both players’ style of play are, it’s certainly a battle of the golden boys. However years ago this could be even more intense, when Thierry Henry was still at Arsenal. I’m sure about 4 years ago everybody wanted to see the 2 best strikers at their peak facing each other on the football field. What a match it would be.

The Emirates will play host to Stoke City on Saturday, December 18, when the Potters take on Arsenal in match week 18.

The Gunners are coming off a 1-0 loss to Manchester United in match week 17, and the game exposed Arsenal’s tendency to choke against the big teams, and that could prove the biggest stumbling block to their title bid, this season. The figures in brackets after the score indicate the odds generally available (not best odds).

The same principal can be applied to the game at Portsmouth v Stoke, where Stoke have scored just 5 goals away from The Potteries in twelve league games this season and Portsmouth have scored either «1» or «2» goals (even in defeat) in their last seven league games at Fratton Park since the end of October. Combining the three most likely results from these three games into a permed treble consists of 27 bets [(1 from 3) x (1 from 3) x (1 from 3)] and with these particular matches, if the more statistically likely results are achieved, your returns will range between 273 and 990 points per 27 points staked.

Liverpool have successfully signed Maxi Rodriguez from Atletico Madrid on a free transfer. Rodriguez has signed a three-and-a-half year contract with the club. Tottenham travel to the Hawthorns this Saturday, for an afternoon kick off against West Brom.

Redknapp’s squad could rely on Defoe and Pavlyucenko to lead the attack, although theres a question mark over Defoe’s fitness, in which case Keane could start in Defoe’s place.

The real weakness is in central defence, where Dawson’s absence is sure to hurt Spurs. An out-of-form King is a poor replacement, while Bassong is not certain to start.

After their accidental loss to Wigan, Tottenham will look to set things right against the Hawthorn’s squad, in what could be a one-sided encounter.

That said, West Brom have done reasonably well against a much stronger Tottenham. Since 2002, in ten matches West Brom have won two against Spurs’ five matches won.

De Matteo’s squad have won their last two home matches against Redknapp’s side. Spurs fans could blame it on the chilly winter weather, they encountered in their last visit in December.

So it will be left to spurs to break the ice  in what is likely to be a watchful defensive game by West Brom.

The appointment of Roy Hodgson was a great decision. Roy Hodgson brings with him a wealth of experience and also great man management skills. Throughout his career he almost managed to exceed expectations.

Up to now they have signed two quality players in Joe Cole and Milan Jovanovic. Many thought that the departure of Benayoun meant a step back for Liverpool but after the signing of Joe Cole many realized that it has been a step forward.

Joe Cole is a younger and much better player than Benayoun. He will definitely be one of their key midfielders with Steven Gerrard for the years to come. Milan Jovanovic is another quality player that plays in a more offensive role than Cole. He may play as a striker and as an attacking midfielder. Both players play for their respective countries and are in their late twenties therefore they are at the peak of their career. They have both won trophies in their career but they still have that much needed thirst of more winning trophies.

Jovanovic wants to prove himself at the highest levels by winning trophies with Liverpool whilst Cole wants to prove to Chelsea wrong in not believing in him. Lastly Liverpool have also managed to hold on to their star players. At first it appeared that Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt and Javier Mascherano would be leaving Anfield but since then they have all stated that they will be staying with Liverpool. All the top players have in reassured about Liverpool’s competitiveness after the last two signings done by the club.

Finally one has to be objective and cannot state as yet that Liverpool will be title contenders but the start is a promising one and it certainly wouldn’t surprise me if Liverpool end up winning the Premier League.
