  • EPL 2011-12: Arsenal Vs Liverpool Match Time

It’s match time at the Emirates as Liverpool gets set to take on Arsenal on Saturday, August 20, in what promises to be an intriguing match between two teams in transition.

While Liverpool will hope to continue on the upswing that began when Dalglish took the reins from Hodgson last season, Arsenal will hope to learn to cope with life after Fabregas and Nasri.

The last time these two teams met was in April, at the Emirates, a match that extended to 12 minutes of injury time. Van Persie scored off a 98th minute penalty and three points from the game would have kept Arsneal’s title dreams alive. As it transpired, Liverpool had a 102nd minute equaliser, also a penalty, taken by Kuyt. The draw meant a virtual end to the Gunners’ hopes of lifting the Premier League trophy, their last title that they won back in 2005.

Arsene Wenger would have hoped for a good beginning to the current campaign, away at St James Park, on August 13, to boost his men’s morale. The match was a case of possession without scoring for Arsenal who had the ball for 60% of the time. But the game will be best remembered for an ugly spat between Barton and Gervinho that saw Gervinho sent off with a red card.

Eomrvinho went down in the Newcastle area, and though referee Walton chose to ignore the incident, Joey Barton deciced to punish the Arsenal opener for what the Newcastle player considered as a blatant attempt to cheat. Barton grabbed Gervinho’s collar, and the Arsenal debutant responded by slapping the Newcastle man.

As for the match itself, Arsenal had several scoring chances but these came for mistakes by Newcastle rather than any creativity from Arsenal. Kieran Gibbs appeared not to have recovered from a thigh injury he sustained a week before; Arshavin had a few patches of brilliance, and Van Persie appeared rusty from lack of match play.

In Liverpool’s opening match against Sunderland, on Saturday, Suarez showed why he could prove to be the winning edge for Liverpool this season. The Uruguayan, fresh from his winning exploits in the Copa America missed a penalty but within minutes made up for it with a brilliant goal that put the Merseysiders ahead, on 12 minutes. Suarez glanced home a brilliantly delivered free kick from Adams. Sunderland got an equaliser on 57 minutes when a volley from Larsson beat keeper Reina. But in the end it was a disappointing result for Liverpool who showed aggressive intent from the starting whistle. Liverpool were distinctly unlucky that Kieran Richardson who tripped suarez in the area was not sent off in the early minutes of the game; a 10-man Sunderland would have struggled, especially in a first half that saw Liverpool on the attack.

But if the Reds had raised hopes with a brilliant attacking display in the first half, they let down their supporters in the second, as they allowed Sunderland to mount their fight-back. That said, the Merseysiders had many positives in the game, not least the dominating presence of Suarez, supported brilliantly by midfielder Adams, and a show of great energy by Downing.

  • Jose’s Chelsea Return

Jose Mourinho is back at the helm at Chelsea and the question on everyone’s lips is how the fiery manager is going to perform this time around.

The general consensus is that Mourinho has learnt a great deal from his time away from the spotlight and the image he’s presenting to the world is a more subdued one so far. He seems to be in control of himself and how he comes across, which is what you would expect from someone as skilled at working the media as he is. If he shows the same kind of ability to whip up a media frenzy before a game that he has in the past, that alone could boost Chelsea’s performance this season.

Jose Mourinho has always been a colourful character – he called himself a «special one» when he was first appointed by Chelsea back in 2004. Certainly, if his success rate is anything to go by, he was justified in thinking of himself that way – he lead his team to back-to-back titles, winning two Barclays Premier League titles, one FA Cup and two League Cups until he left by mutual agreement in 2007.

Mourinho now describes himself as «the happy one» Chelsea has always been important to him and this time around, Mourinho is in it for the long haul, having managed Inter and Real for relatively short periods. He’s always been very vocal about how much he enjoys English football and he’s publicly stated that he intends to work as hard as he can to prove that he should be with Chelsea for the foreseeable future, long beyond the four year term of his current contract.

Mourinho’s style of management has always been focused on picking the best player for the job, regardless of personality and this strategy has served him well – after his winning streak at Chelsea, he took Inter Milan to victory in the 2010 Champions League before moving to Madrid, where he was equally successful.

Refusing to be drawn on Rafael Benitez’ decision not to play John Terry as much as he could, especially since he’d had a similar policy towards Iker Casillas, the Real and Spain captain last season, Mourinho insists that he will play the right man for the job, regardless of how high profile a player may be. This means that it’s likely we’ll see more controversial decisions from the Portuguese manager. It cannot be denied, however, that his focus on the game rather than personalities is what’s brought him the results in the past.

As Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the Far East begins this week, and the players return to pre-season training, Mourinho has promised to play the ‘sexy’ football Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has said he wants to see. This is likely to produce some interesting outcomes given Mourinho’s preference for pacey and powerful football. However, Mourinho has said that he is aiming to please the fans on all fronts, not just with good results, but with entertaining football as well, and given his history and reputation, he’s likely to deliver.

  • The Mystery of Mascherano and Tevez

West Ham’s capture of Argentinean duo Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez in August stunned the footballing world. The Hammers had pulled of a massive coup to land two of the games most prized assets, but their arrival came under a cloud of mystery.

Corinthians had a partnership deal with Media Sports Investment (MSI) who invested in the club and it is alleged that the company actually owned the rights to all of the clubs players (due to Corinthians being unable to afford the contracts). The partnership between Corinthians and MSI is thought to have gone sour and MSI are believed to haved wanted to ship-out their most prized assets in order to protect their investments.

Both players arrived from Brazilian club Corinthians within 48 hours after being sounded out about a move to West Ham and arrived for undisclosed fees. Speculation mounted as to who actually paid the transfer fees (if any were paid at all) and to who actually owned the contracts.

It is believed that even though the players are registered with West Ham, MSI still own the players contracts and are only using the London club as a shop window to maximise their investment. Before West Ham were offered the players, reports suggested that MSI approached Manchester United and Chelsea with a similar deal, both clubs are believed to have rejected their offer as they were not keen on the idea of not owning the players outright.

English newspaper The Guardian reported that should any club offer £35m for either player West Ham would be forced to sell them, but it is unclear who would pocket the transfer fee.

Since their arrival at Upton Park both players have failed to make any impact on the Premiership and have admitted that they have not fully adapted to life in England. Neither player is a first team regular in the Hammers starting XI and their arrival has coincided in the clubs slump in form. This is linked to reports that there is a rift in the dressing room and this has clearly had an impact on results as West Ham are flirting with relegation.

Newspapper reports suggest that both players will be sold in the January transfer and a host of top European clubs are thought to be showing interest. It is believed that Mascherano was set to join Juventus during the summer but their relegation to Serie B cut-short any potential transfer. The Turin club are still interested in the holding midfielder and are considering sounding out a potential move in the winter transfer window. Barcelona have also been heavily linked with Tevez as they currently have an injury crisis upfront. Carlos Tevez has insisted that he does not want to leave West Ham and has denied rumours of a rift within the Upton Park dressing room and has stated that he is determined to forge a career with The Hammers.

With mystery over who actually owns the players and their contracts, it will be out of Mascherano’s and Tevez’s hands where they end up in the near future.

Crystal Palace v West Ham United | Match Highlights

Crystal Palace fought to pull their way from 3-0 down and secure a point against West Ham United on Saturday afternoon, having dominated much of an ultimately cruel game.

Unfortunately however this potential late, great comeback was denied when an eye-catching Mateta overhead-kick flew just past the post and, shortly after, the final whistle sounded.

A harsh defeat confirmed just Palace’s second home loss of the season, and it certainly wasn’t for the want of trying.

  • Shevchenko’s Chelsea Dream

Andriy Shevchenko, the dashing Ukrainian striker, has left Chelsea after spending three unsuccessful years in the club. The man Chelsea bought for a club record 30 million pounds failed to make any impression at the Premier League stage.

When Shevchenko joined the Blues at Stamford Bridge, they had already won two Premier League titles in row. But Chelsea’s bid for a third successive premier league title was dealt a blow when their record summer signing only produced four goals during the whole season. His unconvincing performances meant he was not a regular part of the team, and that prompted him to take a leave from Chelsea football club.

Before moving to the London club, Shevchenko had a great time at AC Milan where he scored 127 goals in the 208 appearances he made for the Italian club. That was the point that made the Shevchenko we know today. He has also represented his home country Ukraine in 79 international matches. That type of success eluded him at the English Premier League. Carlo Ancelotti, the Chelsea manager, has sympathised with Shevchenko saying due to injury and form, he could not be a regular part of the team. He has wished him Best of Luck for his future and has said that the move to Andriy’s old club Dynamo Kiev could well prove to be a very useful one.

He now joins Dynamo Kiev, the football club where he started his career as a young and aspiring footballer, on a two year contract. He has already made his presence felt at Kiev by scoring a goal in the 3-1 win against Metallurg Donetsk. We hope this would be the start of a new era for Andriy Shevchenko, an era where he can prove that he is still the Ukrainian wonder who can turn matches around with his magical footballing skills!
