  • Champions League Review – Has Tevez Played His Last Game For Manchester City?

Manchester City were beaten by an impressive Bayern Munich side in the Champions League group A game. Bayern have now won their last ten games in all competitions, while City have yet to record a victory in their debutant Champions League campaign.

Mario Gomez scored twice for the hosts during the first half, in a game which could have seen Bayern win by an even greater margin. Gomez, who is the top scorer in the German Bundesliga scored his first goal after 38 minutes, following saves from the Blues goalkeeper Joe Hart from both Franck Ribery and Thomas Mueller. Gomez was on hand again a few minutes later to score another goal from close range.

An insipid performance from City was made worse during the second half when striker Carlos Tevez, who was not in the starting eleven for the second consecutive game, refused to warm up and come on as a substitute, the unprecedented scene could now signal the end of his Manchester City career.

Tevez who had made his intentions of his desire to leave the club very clear during the summer, had cited his desire to leave due to family reasons. Despite interest from several clubs during the pre-season, which included Inter Milan and former club

Corinthians, a transfer away from the Blues could not be finalized. Tevez had also been replaced as club captain by Vincent Kompany, after his perceived disloyalty to the club by attempting to force through a transfer away from the club.

City manager Roberto Mancini has now stated that Tevez will never play for City again while he is the manager, however Tevez has since responded to the incident by stating that this was a misunderstanding and that he has always given his best for the club.

City’s off field problems seemed to be exacerbated when striker Edin Dzeko was replaced by Nigel de Jong ten minutes into the second half and he shook his head at Mancini as he left the pitch, which could be perceived as more dressing room unrest at the club.

Tévez signed a five-year contract with Manchester City in July 2009, after a much published transfer from rivals Manchester United, and he was made the club captain the following season, despite his prolific goal scoring record, he has made his intentions about his future quite clear, after first handing in a transfer request in December 2010, the player may well now lose the support of the fans and certainly the manager.

  • Cesc Fabregas – The Spanish Genius at the Heart of Arsenal

One of the world’s finest midfield players, Cesc Fàbregas has come to personify Arsene Wenger’s philosophy on the football field. Mobile, possessing a delightful first touch, completely unselfish, always aware of ‘the big picture’ and totally committed to playing the game in the ‘correct’ way, Fàbregas is the perfect midfielder for one of Wenger’s teams.

How Barcelona must still curse the day they allowed Cesc Fàbregas to slip through their fingers. It wasn’t as if they didn’t know about him, either. The acknowledged star of their much acclaimed youth policy having scored 30 goals in a single season and player of the tournament in a FIFA Under 17 World Championships, the Catalan giants knew that they had a star in the making. And yet Arsene Wenger was able to persuade him to turn his back on the team that he loved and had played for since childhood and come instead to north London. It seems as if Barcelona have been trying to sign him back ever since.

It didn’t take very long for Arsenal fans to appreciate why the club had signed the young Spaniard, however. Despite his comparatively small stature, Cesc was put into the first team in a League Cup fixture when he was only 16 years old in 2003 and the following season he became the Gunners’ youngest ever goalscorer in a Premier League fixture. When you compare Fàbregas’ progress with the careful manner in which the Arsenal manager has nursed along the talents of, for example, Walcott, Ramsey and Merida then you can appreciate how highly he must have been regarded. After all, Cesc had played his 150 first team match before his 20th birthday.

The current 2009/10 season has seen Cesc playing in a role in which he has been able to get into the opposition penalty area more frequently. The consequence of this has been that, at the time of writing, his composure in front of goal had seen him score a more than adequate 9 goals in 15 games, in the League and Champions’ League competitions. The manner in which he has linked up with Van Persie, Arshavin and others has won Arsenal plaudits all over Europe.

Never afraid to put a tackle in – and certainly never shy about standing his ground – Fàbregas’ commitment to Arsenal is another reason why the fans love their captain so much. Although a very different type of player to the legendary Tony Adams, he has become another Arsenal captain that the followers of this famous London club think of as their own representative out on the pitch.

Cesc Fàbregas has become an important member of the successful Spanish squad in recent years, with 45 international caps and 4 goals to his credit so far. His profile at home is high enough for both Spanish giants, Real Madrid and Barcelona to actively covet his signature on frequent occasions. With his boyhood hero, Pep Guardiola, now manager of Barcelona, it seems unthinkable that Cesc would sign for anyone but them, should he leave Arsenal, but Arsenal fans everywhere will hope that day is a good few years off yet.

And the Premier League really would be a lesser place without a player like Cesc Fàbregas lighting it up.

  • The 3 Biggest Names This World Cup

Are you totally ignorant about football? Know nothing about the beautiful game? With the 2010 Fifa World Cup just round the corner, here you 3 of the biggest names on show. Learn them and not be left out of the conversation.

    1) Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi is the 2009 European and World Footballer of the Year and one of the most skillful footballers in the world. Only 22, his dribbling skills have earned him comparisons with the great Diego Maradona. Messi has just completed a fantastic season for Barcelona, helping them retain the league title. Many fans feel that it’s a matter of time before Messi is elevated to the true greats of football, joining the likes of Pele and Maradona. However, in order to reach such heights, Messi must first win the World Cup. Will he be able to do so in South Africa this June? Messi has never been able to replicate his form for Argentina but is well poised to do so in the grandest stage of all.

    2) Cristiano Ronaldo

Love him or hate him, Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the most well known footballers today. Ronaldo shot to fame with his transfer to Manchester United in 2003 and won the coveted Champions League with the Red Devils in 2008. A dazzling dribber, Ronaldo is also an accomplished scorer and header of the ball. The 2009 World Player of the Year, Ronaldo moved to Real Madrid in 2009 for a world record 80 million pounds and narrowly missed out on the league title with his new club. The biggest star in a skill Portuguese team, Ronaldo is already assured of his place as one of the greatest footballers of all time.

    3) Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney, only 24, is England’s biggest star. His rise has been meteoric, becoming the youngest player to score in the Premier League in 2002, breaking Arsenal’s then unbeaten spell. His subsequent transfer from Everton to Manchester United has seen him pick up numerous accolades such as the 2010 Players’ Player of the Year. Known for this aggressive running and never say die attitude, Rooney has had his best season so far and is so important to England that then manager Sven Goran Eriksson took him to the 2006 World Cup even though he wasn’t fully fit. Having tarnished his last World Cup appearance by getting sent off against Portugal for a stamp on Ricardo Carvalho, Rooney has improved his temperament and is in good form for the World Cup.

  • Soccer Betting – The "Asian Handicap"

A draw, or tied score, is a frequent outcome in soccer. In the 2008-2009 season, almost a quarter of all Premier League matches resulted in a draw. Because such an outcome is so common, traditional betting usually involves betting within the context of three different outcomes: a win for one team, a draw, or a win for the other team. The «Asian handicap» is a means of changing this by «handicapping» the underdog by a certain percentage, meaning that a draw becomes impossible.

Most handicaps are made at intervals of one half or one quarter, meaning that there has to be a winner since it is impossible to score a half or quarter goal. The purpose is to make the odds as close to 50-50 as possible and eliminating the draw as a possible outcome. Because the odds are almost half when a handicap is applied, the payout is usually even money, or very close to it.

The primary benefit is encouraging punters to bet on matches where there is a clear favorite. For example, if Manchester United (winner of the Premier League in the 2008-2009 season) were to play West Bromwich (the bottom team of the Premier League during the same season), few punters would be interested in betting. This is because Manchester United is a much better team and the odds are strongly in their favor.

However, if West Bromwich was given a handicap of +2.5, it would mean that they would be effectively starting with a lead of 2.5 goals. This means Manchester United would have to score three goals more than West Bromwich to be the winner as far as the bet is concerned. If West Bromwich scored one goal, then Manchester would have to score four to win. Handicapping obviously changes the odds significantly.

An interesting aspect of handicapping is the push. If an even number is used for the handicap, and the actual score plus the handicap equals a draw, then this is a push. For example, if in the example given above West Bromwich was given a handicap of 2 and failed to score any goals, and Manchester United only scored two goals, this would be a push. The result of a push is that all the punters receive their original wagers returned as there was no winner.

The «Asian Handicap» adds an additional element to soccer betting that can be both fun and profitable. This form of betting can be helpful for those punters that have a personal favorite that they intend to bet on, but are not confident that their favorite will win a particular match.

  • Football Manager 2010 – How to Score a Lot of Goals Through Corner Kicks

A lot of people consider Football Manager 2010 to be a difficult game, and it can be a daunting endeavor to learn all the ins and outs of the vast tactical system. Learning how to score a lot of goals through corner kicks can provide that extra boost you need to win games while tweaking your tactics to perfection.

So, how do you do it?

    1. Set the starting player with the highest corner taking-ability as the one taking your corner. In my experience, it doesn’t matter that much if he’s a right or left foot, this should work anyway. Should you, however, find that it doesn’t, then simply adjust it to having a left-footed player taking the left side corners, and vice versa.

    2. Go to «Advanced», and select the option that makes the corner taker aim the corner kicks at the edge of the penalty box.

    3. Choose the player who is the best at long-range shots, and give him orders to wait outside the penalty box.

    4. Give your strongest (preferrably the tallest one, too) player orders to cover the goalkeeper.

    5. Position the rest of the players based on your own mentality. If you want to keep it more conservative, you can keep three or four players back in your own defensive end. I usually put a couple of players inside the penalty box to wreak havoc and confuse the defenders. If you have too few offensive players, it may leave the computer with enough defenders available to rush out and cover your long-distance shots.

In my experience, this will lead to at least one goal per game, and it can lead to a lot more than that if you have a truly solid gunner.

Make sure the shooting player has high scores on all attributes which involve receiving the ball, and shooting from afar. Technique, ball control, and such attributes are all essential.

It is, of course, preferrable to have a player who is well-rounded and talented in all aspects of the game, to further increase your chances of success. With this corner tactic, I played with Manchester United and had Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who excels at all aspects of the game, gunning for me. The result? He scored 53 goals in 32 games, and set an all-time record for goal scoring in the Premier League. A few seasons earlier I tried the same with Swedish youngster Linus Hallenius in Swedish Premier League side Örebro SK, and his goalscoring record ended up at 45 goals in 26 games.

As you can see, it can be a real tactical advantage!

  • How Will Arsenal Fare in The New EPL Season?

It is almost universally accepted that they play the most expansive and attractive brand of football in the English Premier League. Yet, they have now gone five years without winning a single trophy – that despite the promise from manager Arsene Wenger that his team were ready to win a major trophy last season. The faithful fans await that day when there will be an addition to the Gunners’ trophy cabinet.

Critics will say that Arsenal have now pretty much officially gone into reverse as a team, and certainly as a major force in the English premier league since 2005. That was the last year the Gunners finished in the top two of the premiership even though they were 12 points behind the then champions – Chelsea. Since then they have basically flattered to deceive as genuine title contenders. Over that period, they finished 4th in 2006, 4th in 2007, 3rd in 2008, 4th in 2009, and 3rd in 2010.

As most fans know all too well, winning the English premier league is a tough challenge and it has certainly got tougher in the time since the Gunners last won the league. In that time, although Manchester United have won the league there times and Chelsea twice, a number of newbies have emerged to challenge the orthodoxy.

Enter Old Trafford’s noisy neighbours from Manchester City and the Gunners’ very own neighbours from hell, Spurs. Tottenham have moved from journey men in to a serious outfit under the management of Harry Redknapp who seems to be enjoying the chance to manage a club with big ambitions and relatively deep pockets.

Fancy footwork only goes so far. What Arsenal need is not a flashy striker but some semblance of backbone running through the team. A solid midfielder who can hold the forte while others around him such as Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri surge forward is much needed and the available option simply don’t cut it at the highest level. Memories of Rooney and Ronaldo and then Rooney and Nani running rings around the arsenal midfield and defense in subsequent Champions League semi-finals still haunt the Emirate faithful. Alexander Hleb, a former Arsenal midfielder recently joined Birmingham City football club on loan for the season. His old team could probably use his services even more.

Arsenal’s squad for the new season consists of the following players: Manuel Almunia, Andrey Arshavin, Nicklas Bendtner, Marouane Chamakh, Gael Clichy, Pereka Neves Denilson, Vassiriki Abou Diaby, Johan Danon Djourou-Gbadjere, Emmanuel Eboue, Lukasz Fabianski, Cesc Fabregas, Laurent Koscielny, Vito Mannone, Samir Nasri, Tomas Rosicky, Bacary Sagna, Bilong Song, Dimitri Alexandre, Robin Van Persie, Thomas Vermaelen, Sebastien Squillaci.

  • HIGHLIGHTS | Norwich vs Arsenal (0-5) | Premier League | Lacazette, Saka, Smith Rowe, Tierney

HIGHLIGHTS | Norwich vs Arsenal (0-5) | Premier League | Lacazette, Saka, Smith Rowe, Tierney

We won our fourth Premier League match on the bounce – five in all competitions – with a comprehensive victory at Norwich on Boxing Day.

In a match we dominated for large parts, Bukayo Saka scored once in each half, sandwiched by a fine Kieran Tierney strike and an Alex Lacazette penalty and Emile Smith Rowe’s injury-time strike ensured we moved to within three points of third-placed Chelsea.

Having been hit with a spate of Covid absences, Mikel Arteta had to shuffle his pack and with no fit specialised right back, Ben White moved across and Rob Holding came into the heart of the defence.

Our recent fine form had given us confidence to attack the Premier League’s bottom club right from the off, and it only took us six minutes to open the scoring.

Martin Odegaard – outstanding in recent weeks – was once again at the heart of it, receiving the ball in the box after good work from Gabriel Martinelli and Lacazette, and feeding Saka to sweep home.

We continued to press forward and Lacazette had a good chance to double our advantage but miscued a header wide from close range, while Saka and then Martinelli also tried their luck.

Two minutes before the interval we finally made our pressure count as Odegaard picked out the onrushing Kieran Tierney in plenty of space on the left, and the Scotland international raced into the box and found the far corner.

We continued to dominate after the restart and thought we had a third when Martinelli’s shot deflected into the far corner – but the Brazilian was flagged for offside.

But we did not have long to wait to extend our lead, Saka collecting the ball on the right of the area, wrapping up Brandon Williams in knots and firing a fierce shot into the far corner.

We were handed the chance to make it four when Lacazette was barged down in the area, and the skipper made no mistake from the spot.

Smith Rowe only on the pitch a matter of minutes wrapped things up in injury time with a close-range finish, capping off a fine win on the road.
