Nicknamed «The Cat», Vincent Enyeama is one of the most favorite players in the Nigerian National Squad by both fans in his country and coaches. For several years he had been the undisputed first choice by Nigeria’s coaches in goal for the squad. Born on August 29, 1982, he had been the top goalkeeper for the Super Eagles since he took over from Ike Shorunmu in his country’s final match at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Beginning his soccer career at an early age of 16 with the semi-professional club Ibom Stars, he continued to improve his skills until he was signed by the major club Enyimba Aba where he played for three seasons from 2001-2004. During his stint at that club, he won the CAF Champions League twice. However, he was always substituted before penalty shootouts by his coach. Not knowing the real reason behind this, but accepting the fact that he probably was not good enough for penalty kick stoppages, he work doubly hard and mentally trained himself to prepare for such events and not falter. He moved to FC Heartland for the 2005 season before transferring to Israel.

In Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv, a minor league club in Israel, he had a very productive first season showing his feline-like physical abilities and athletic skills. In his first season there, his contributions on the pitch helped his team qualify for the Israel State Cup and achieve fourth place in the Israeli Premier League which, in turn, qualified the team to the 2006 UEFA Cup. He stayed with the club for two seasons and in 2007 moved to Hapoel Tel Aviv where he is currently connected.

Although his team did not have a good 2007-08 season, Vincent Enyeama continued to grow and improve not only his goalkeeping skills but also his leadership skills as well. At one time when his club wasn’t performing well, he wrote his team a letter asking them to work together and fight for each other and the club. He had not only continued to improve as a player but also a leader which helped his team not only avoid relegation and but also contend for the state cup final. His consistent improvements are results of a superb training system that include not only physical conditioning but mental training as well to keep his focus intact every second of a match.

His consistent performance for his commercial clubs earned him a substitute spot for the 2002 World Cup where he played for only one match which was against England. During that last group game, he steadied is nerves and kept his composure to keep a clean sheet and salvage a draw against the powerhouse English squad. Since then he became his coaches’ top choice for goalkeeper when Ike Shorunmu retired from international soccer.

He had consistently contained his country’s goal during the 2004 and 2006 African Cup of Nations. He had a very memorable 2010 sequel of the tournament when he stopped three penalties in the quarterfinals against Tunisia but unfortunately lost to Cote d’Ivore in the semi-final.

The goalkeeper who had been substituted before penalty shootouts early in his career became the hero for many of Nigeria’s international games.

In the first group stage match against Argentina in the 2010 World Cup, had a superb performance by stopping and saving a variety of shots from some the top goal-scorers in the world such as Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain but could not save the game-winning header from Gabriel Heinze. Still, with that loss, he was named Man of the Match for his spectacular performance.

Even in the face of defeat, an athlete who had shown great resilience and desire against a mightier opponent is always given due recognition. Enyeama, who chose to be better than who he was before by consistently learning, is one goalkeeper who has etched his name as one of the best in the world of soccer.

The North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur is one of the most eagerly-awaited events in the calendars of both sets of fans. But it remains to be seen how the struggling Spurs will fare against the really big boys of the Premier League and in the derby they’ll be looking to continue their sharp ascent of the table and show what they’re made of.

Just days after securing a fourth consecutive Series A title, Inter Milan announced the extension of manager Jose Mourinho’s contract until 30 June, 2012.

The deal was hailed by Inter as being «a sign of attachment and of winning spirit.» Mourinho, 46, has now won the league in three different countries, as well as the Champions League with Porto in 2004.

A statement on the club’s website said that the extension was «a response to the wish of the coach to continue the project started together a year ago, a wish welcomed with pleasure by the club.»

The Italian club will now be hoping that Mourinho can bring European success to the San Siro, who have not won the European cup since 1965. The club however have won the UEFA Cup three times, most recently in 1998.

In his first season in Italy, Mourinho won the ‘Supercoppa Italiana’ as well as the Serie A title, but the Italian giants were knocked out of the Champions League by defending champions Manchester United at the last 16 stage.

But if there was one manager who can bring European success to the San Siro in the coming seasons, most football fans would surely agree that the ‘special one’ is one of the best candidates for the job.

And Mourinho is convinced that there is not much distance between Inter and United. «We were very close to beating them,» he said.

«So if we improve we will be close, very close to the teams from the Premier League. But it is very difficult to get players.»

In the last few days, Mourinho has talked up the possibility of bringing Chelsea centre-back Ricardo Carvalho to Milan – a player who has worked under the Portuguese manager at both Porto and Chelsea.

The Inter boss said: «One player who would improve us at Inter is Ricardo Carvalho. He is not playing at Chelsea now and it looks like Alex is in front of him, so maybe it is better to let him come here and play.»

With the January transfer window now open, the big question on everyone’s lips remains the same. Will Chelsea FC sign any players during the window? Their team is nowhere near full strength at the moment, and with an aging squad the problem may only get worse. In my opinion, they need to sign a couple of players at least. News has leaked out recently that Chelsea are looking to buy Italian striker Giampaolo Pazzini from surprise Italian package Sampdoria. The deal would reportedly be for around £22 million pounds, although a potential stumbling block could be that Sampdoria would want Pazzini loaned back to them for the rest of the season.

A towering personality Edwin van der Sar is probably the best goalkeeper to have played for Netherlands. Born on the October 29, 1970, he began his football career by playing for his local city team FC Foreholte in Voorhout.

His crowning moment was when he won the penalty shootout against Sweden in the Euro 2004 quarter final. This was the first time that the Dutch had won a penalty shoot-out. Van der Sar is admired for his grit and determination, and his ability to analyze the moves of the opposition forwards.

It was a sad day for Ultimate Fighting Championship when Dana White was forced stoop to giving away a free car to drum up excitement about a UFC bout. Fans will only tolerate so much exploitation, and cheap gimmicks that attempt to divert attention away from the incredibly unbalanced ticket will only go so far. Hyping a fight is a good way to expose more people to the exciting world of UFC, but there has to be the promise of a good fight to back it up.

PRIDE FC has been UFC’s competition from day one, and now UFC is tapping out to PRIDE. Witness the recent spectacle at UFC 61 when Dana White pulled Wanderlei Silva out of the crowd and declared he would battle Chuck Liddell in November, provided Liddell retained his title at UFC 62. Pitting fighters from rival organizations may help hype a fight and make mountains of cash for promoters like Dana White, but it does nothing to shore up the reputation of the UFC as the premier fighting league in the world.

If the UFC wants to stay competitive with PRIDE FC as it claims more and more territory in the U.S., we must all make many tough choices. Are we willing to sit back and let promoters distract us from our sport with over-hyped fights that divert attention away from the thousands of fighters waiting to prove themselves against the best the UFC has to offer? Will White have to bring in more and more PRIDE fighters into UFC to drum up excitement? Are we willing to roll over and pay dead as PRIDE moves in against us? And if that is the case, does UFC deserve to lose out to PRIDE?

These questions and more will be answered in the coming days as UFC 62 draws near. Who will stand tall, and who will fall short? Hopefully UFC fans won’t come out on the losing end. Again.
