  • English Premier League 2010/11 – Who Will Be Relegated?

As the lucky few at the top of the Premier League table ponder title glory and European qualification, so the majority of the league has relegation as a more realistic, if unwanted, possibility. In this feature we look at the likely candidates and tell you now the teams that will be relegated from the Premier League come May 2011.

At the start of the season there was one man in the world, just one out of six billion or so, who thought that Blackpool would survive the rigour of a Premier League examination and last to a second (or maybe a third) season. That the man in question was crazy Ian Holloway made his belief seem all the more misplaced. Ian «rent-a-quote» Holloway, good for a laugh, did a decent job and got lucky last season… but Premier League survival? No way.

However, in the most unpredictable and downright insane Premier League season for years we have Blackpool flying high in 10th place with games in hand that could move them 6th. Even more amazing is the fact that they have played just eight of their 21 games at home due to the cold winter and their antiquated ground facilities. Is this the most astonishing thing about the season? Probably. But what about Newcastle sitting in 9th, Chelsea in 4th, Bolton passing their way towards a Europa League place, Everton and Liverpool both in the bottom half and last but not least, Aston Villa lying 17th, clear of the relegation zone only by virtue of goal difference?

Oh yes, this has been a funny old year for the funny old game. The relegation battle has been the same, tight, unpredictable and impossible to call. As it stands the relegation places are occupied by Wigan in 18th, then Wolves and West Ham propping up the league. However, with just 10 points separating the Hammers in last, and Bolton, who are 7th, anything could yet happen.

Okay, let’s look at the teams in trouble…

Everpool – I’ll group these two average Mersey sides together and file them under «safe». Everton have the edge in terms of personnel and a more stable set-up off the pitch but even Liverpool have too much to be in trouble. Don’t waste your money betting on either of these to be relegated from the Premier League in 2011.

Blackpool – May occupy a place in the top half, may have games in hand, may have HOME games in hand, but not safe just yet. As injuries and fixtures stack up the Tangerines could get sucked into relegation danger. They still have to play Manchester United and Spurs twice – no points from those four would put a different complexion on matters.

Blackburn – Another struggling North West club that has points on the board but may struggle. The manager doesn’t convince but they will probably spend a few quid in the window to secure safety.

West Brom – The Baggies started the season in scintillating form. Six games in September and October saw them go unbeaten, drawing with Spurs and Manchester United and beating Arsenal. They were scoring goals for fun and passing the ball like a footballing lovechild of Arsenal and Brazil. Since November, however, they have lost nine out of 13 league matches. Their next three home games are against Wigan, West Ham and Wolves and if they get the same result they had against Blackpool – a win – in their last home game, they will be fine. Their home form is strong so we say the Baggies WON’T be relegated this season.

Fulham – Hughes is too good a manager and too determined for Fulham to go down. With Andy Johnson back to fitness and scoring they will have enough quality, with Dempsey, Hangeland and the returning Bobby Zamora, to turn their spate of draws into enough relegation-avoiding wins.

Birmingham City – One of the surprise teams of last season when they ground out 1-0 victories like the Arsenal of old, Birmingham have struggled this season. They have drawn too many games like Fulham but, also like Fulham, their goal difference gives them an extra point over their relegation rivals and this, as well as their solid defence, will see them safe.

Aston Villa – Signing Darren Bent for £18m shows their intentions. Will probably pick up another player or two in the window and with the experienced Houllier at the realm they’ll be fine.

Wigan – Sorry pie-eaters, Wigan ARE going to be relegated from the Premier League. They have the least effective attack in the league, for all Martinez’ passing ideals, and are leaky at the back. The squad has lost key players in recent seasons and not replaced them and they do not have the spine, grit or heart for the fight. Moreover, they have all the big teams left to play as well as tough away fixtures at Sunderland, West Brom and Stoke. The fixtures say bye bye Wigan.

Wolves – The only one of the three Ws at the foot of the table with any hope of avoiding relegation from the Premier League. They have a great team ethic and spirit and have been very unlucky in many games thus far. With a bit of luck and key players, such as striker Doyle, coming back to fitness they have got a decent chance.

West Ham – Doomed, doomed, doomed. We’ve said it for a while and whilst it’s hardly the call of the century we’ve stuck to our guns despite their mini-revival. They’re led by a man with the charisma of an ironing board and have just one player who seems up for the battle, in Scott Parker. Piquionne recently missing a game to recover in France from tooth ache just about sums up the fight in the squad. Like Wigan they have lost important players over the last two seasons, for example Dean Ashton, James Collins and Lee Bowyer and not replaced them and also like Wigan, the fixtures do not look kind. West Ham, meet The Championship, TC, meet West Ham.

So who will be relegated from the Premier League?

Ok, yes, that’s just two teams, West Ham and Wigan, that we’ve said will definitely be relegated. The last place will boil right down to the wire and I wouldn’t be surprised to see three or even four teams all in the mix come the last weekend of the season. Wolves, Blackpool, Blackburn and West Brom look the most vulnerable but in this mad year perhaps Liverpool or one of the other «big» clubs may give us a shock. We’re going to be cheeky and leave the third team till later in the season so for now, the teams that will be relegated from the Premier League are West Ham and Wigan.

  • Premier League Predictions and Stats – The Best Sites

Why Would You Need Premier League Statistics?

There are lots of reasons you might need football stats. Mostly people seek out football (soccer) stats and predictions because they want some insight in to what might happen in a big forthcoming match either to be in the know or sometimes to make educated predictions and bets with friends.

People seek out football stats sites so they can indulge in the history of certain rivalries between two teams, to pick up on the form of one team or another or simply to learn more about the depth of what goes on in their favourite game.

The Problem With Premier League Stats Websites

The main issue with looking for these stats on the web is that many of the sites that display them have focused so much on integrating good, valuable data that very little effort has gone in to design. So the sites can look dated and unattractive, but don’t be put off, these sites often contain some solid gold.

The other issue is that because many of these sites have to license their data fro world’s major football data providers (some times at great expense) a lot of what you find is repeated across lots of sites which can make the search for specific data infuriating.

    The Best of The Best

Through countless hours spent doing research I have been through most of the sites that are out there and available for free. So below is a list of those that are top of the pile, unless you’re planning on becoming a manager, you won’t need any others:

    1. Football365 Stats If you’re after the kind of information which is going to satisfy 90% of regular users then you won’t need to look beyond here. The layout can take a while to get used to, but once you’re in the flow you can find current and historical data in the Premier League (going back to 1998) and the major leagues and competitions in Europe. You can find this site by looking for football365 on Google and then clicking the «Stats» link in the top menu.

The only down side to this site is that that data doesn’t go back beyond 1998 in most cases and you’ll need to be determined in order to get comfortable with the way the data is laid out.

Top tip: Once you’ve selected a season, competition or league table, scroll down to the bottom of the page and check out the stats index, here you can find dozens of different tables to show recent form, scoring, defending and resolve stats. It’s also a great place to look if you want results by individual team rather than league.

    2. BBC Football – There aren’t a massive amount of stats on this site, in fact it’s all kept pretty top line and basic, but when it comes to getting fixtures, results, goal scorers and top scorers info by league then it’s the most straight forward and reliable place to get them. To find the site simply Google BBC Football and click the Premier League on the left.

    3. Soccer Base – This site has all the usual stats, odds, and upcoming matches, but it has something most of the others don’t. On the home page there is a list of up coming games, a form indicator, and Expert Verdict which is amongst the most credible around, especially if you’re thinking about a bet.

Finding the best bits takes a bit of exploring, the problem is there is just so much data out there that could be useful to you depending on what your objective is that sometimes this can cause any stats website try and present too much in too little space, but once again your determination will get you some gold on this site.

Top Tip: Where this site really comes in to it’s own is the head to head stats. There is no where else on the web that you should look if you want to see how two teams have played against one another down the years. The time line goes back 20 or 30 years, and most of the stats include goal scorers, yellow cards and even the players that were playing in each match. A proper trip down memory lane.

    4. Soccer Stats – Gives you a great overview of about 20 top leagues in Europe and you can quickly find out the average number of goals being scored in each league as well as easily comparing some other top line football stats and great summaries at the bottom of each page. You can find the site by typing «soccerstats» in to Google.

As usual you will need to be in an exploratory mode to get the best out of this site, some of the data is tucked away in hard to reach places, but the layout is pretty straight forward and your time will be well rewarded for being inquisitive.

Top Tip: The main strength of this web site is the easy to follow information which can be found on the Trends and Timing tabs within each of the individual league pages. These will show the most frequent score lines and when in a match teams are scoring most of their goals.

    5. Statto – You might not be blown away on first viewing, once again the site is more about data than design, but you should never judge a book by it’s cover. Not only does the league table information on this site go back to 1888 but a quick look and a few clicks down the left hand menu will show you a whole raft of interesting stats, some of which you won’t find else where.

Top Tip: The feature I use most often on this site is hidden away, but well worth a look. If you click «Tables» in the left hand menu it’ll show you the current league table with three drop downs above it. From these drop downs you can select to see the table not only for any league and any season, but uniquely for any week during a given season. So if you want to know what the table looked like at the same stage last season, or in the same week in 1984, it’s very easy to do.

  • Premier League Preview: Arsenal Vs Chelsea

Arsenal are set to host Chelsea on Monday, December 27, in a match that could have a great bearing on Gunners’ title bid this season.

Despite being placed second after 17 match weeks, Arsene Wenger’s squad haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory against the better teams, losing to Chelsea, Man United and Tottenham.

Arsenal dominated the first 30 minutes of the game against Chelsea and should have scored twice in the first 100 seconds. And with Drogba putting the blues ahead just minutes before the interval, the Gunners came out firing after the break. And but for an out-of-the-word free kick by Alex for Chelsea, Wenger’s men could still have pressed for an equaliser.

The loss to Chelsea came on October 2, and much water has flowed under the proverbial bridge, since then. Circumstances have changed, not least in terms of match fit players available. During their visit to Stamford Bridge in October, Gunners missed Fabregas, Almunia, Van Persie, Bendtner and Walcott, all sidelined through injury.

While Almunia is not fully recovered from his elbow injury, Wenger will welcome the return of Fabregas, Van Persie and Walcott, and the presence of the trio could make all the difference to the confidence of a team that has suffered six consecutive league losses to the Blues.

Another factor that has worked against Gunners’ best interests has been Drogba who has scored 13 goals in as many matches against the Emirates squad. And with Drogba getting back to his goal scoring ways against Tottenham, Wenger’s charges will pay heed to the omens.

While Arsenal’s attack has been impressive, and their midfield should get a boost with Fabregas’s return, the back-line has been a cause for worry. With both Almunia and Fabianski injured, they also have a problem between the posts. Their third goalkeeper Szczesny who had his Premier League debut against Man United struggled on the back of a porous defence in which Squillaci was the biggest culprit.

On the plus side, Nasri is in tremendous form and could make the difference up front. While Arshavin could give way to Van Persie and Wilshere to Fabregas, Arsene Wenger would also want the pace of Walcott against the Chelsea back-line, more obdurate after the return of Terry.

Chelsea have been through a bad spell of three draws and two losses from matches 13 to 17 that has seen them slip from the top of the table to fourth place, but there are clear signs of a revival. The champions should have reclaimed their top spot in match week 17, but for Drogba’s missed penalty in the dying stages.

With Lampard’s return, the Blues will have the strength they need in midfield to dominate possession and neutralise the Arsenal forward line. Arsenal’s weak back-line should be sorely tested by the likes of Kalou and Malouda, apart from Drogba.

Arsenal will rely on home advantage against Chelsea who haven’t had a great record in nine games on the road this season, with three matches each won, lost and drawn. Gunners on their part have won five of eight home games while losing the remainder.

If both sides were able to field their best elevens, this could turn out to be the most exciting game of the Premiership yet.

Arsenal had the following men in their starting eleven against Manchester united: Szczesny, Sagna, Squillaci, Koscielny, Clichy, Song, Rosicky, Wiulshere, Nasri, Chamakh and Arshavin. Fabregas, Van Persie and Walcott featured as substitutes.

Chelsea’s starting eleven against Tottenham comprised: Cech, Ferreira, Ivanovic, Terry, Cole, Ramires, Mikel, Essien, Kalou, Anelka and Malouda. Droba, Sturridge and Lampard were used as substitutes.

  • Premier League Preview: Arsenal Vs Liverpool

Premier League match time returns to the Emirates with Arsenal set to host Liverpool in match week 33 on Sunday, April 17, in the second of a two-legged contest.

The first, hosted by Liverpool on August 15, 2010, ended in a 1-1 stalemate. With neither side scoring in the first half, the stalemate was broken immediately after the interval, when Ngog gave Liverpool the lead. Arsenal had Reina in the Liverpool goal to thank for their equalizer when the Reds’ keeper gloved an own goal in injury time. Earlier Liverpool were reduced to 10 men, when Cole was sent off, on the stroke of half-time. Arsenal midfielder Koscielny collected two bookings to reduce the Gunners to 10 men, themselves, in stoppage time.

Their keeper Almunia was the weak link in the Arsenal armour, and for some time, arsene Wenger had been negotiating to wean Fulham’s Schwarzer to take his place. Barring Cole’s sending off, Liverpool gave a good account of themselves, and kept Arsenal’s forwards at bay, for the best part of 90 minutes.

Head to head, Arsenal have established an 8-4 lead over Liverpool in the last 20 league games played between the sides, with the remaining 8 matches drawn.

In their last 10 league games, Arsenal have registered 5 wins and 5 draws, while Liverpool have won 6 of their last 10, while losing and drawing 4 each. Of their 16 home games this season, Arsenal have won 10, and lost and drawn 3 games each, while Liverpool have won 4 of their 16 games on the road, while losing 2 and drawing the remaining 10.

In match week 32, Arsenal won 3-1 away at Blackpool, while Liverpool beat Manchester City 3-0 at home.

Sunday’s game assumes great significance for both teams. Arsenal would seek all of their remaining games, to keep their slender title hopes alive. Similarly, Liverpool, who are currently in 6th place, would want to use the remaining games to best advantage, and try to wrest a European qualification. Expect the Reds to fight hard in a game that will give Arsenal the considerable advantage of playing at home.

Arsenal’s starting eleven against Blackpool had the following players: Lehmann, Eboue, Squillaci, Koscielny, Clichy, Diaby, Fabregas, Wilshere, Nasri, van Persie and Arshavin. Ramsey, Gibbs and Walcott played as substitutes.

Liverpool had the following men in their starting eleven against Manchester City: Reina, Flanagan, Carragher, Skrtel, Aurelio, Kuyt, Lucas, Spearing, Meireles, Suarez and Carroll. Ngog was used as a substitute.

  • English Premier League Preview – Chelsea and Arsenal

Chelsea have always been a top side challenging to get to the top four and this season will be no different. The biggest change that Chelsea has undergone is the change in their manager. Guus Hiddink who had an awesome time at Chelsea is replaced by the experienced AC Milan manager Carlo Ancelotti. The squad has not undergone many changes but it will be boosted with the addition of Russian midfielder Yuri Zhirkov from CSKA Moscow, English striker Daniel Sturridge from Manchester City and Middlesbrough keeper Ross Turnbull. Chelsea have one of the strongest squads in the Premier League with the likes of Lampard, Terry, Drogba, Anelka, Deco, Ballack, Cech and much more and their chance to win the title will entirely depend on team management, team chemistry and how well they handle pressure.

Arsenal, in my opinion, would have to fight to keep its place in the top four unlike the rest of the top four which are challenging to win the title. This is mainly because Arsenal did not put up a very good show last season according to their high standards and the strengthening of the Manchester City squad will challenge the Gunners for a place in the top four. Arsenal lost there top striker Adebayor and defender Tolo Toure to Manchester City. Even though they have a slightly weaker squad and not a very good performance last season, it will all depend on how Arsene Wenger handles his team. With top players like Fabregas, Gallas, Van Persie, Arshavin and the rest, Arsenal will surely have an outside chance for the title but its all in the managers hands.
