West Brom host Bolton, in match week 12, of the Premier League, on Saturday, November 19, 2011.

West Brom are coming off a 3-0 loss away at Arsenal, in match week 11. Van Persie proved to be too hot to handle for the Baggies, as he first gave his side the lead on 22 minutes and assisted Vermaelen and Arteta on either side of the interval. West Brom gave a good account of themselves at the beginning, and until Van Persie’s goal, it was an even contest. But Arsenal appeared to draw strength from the strike and went from strength to strength, and particularly after the interval, the visitors found it hard to get out of their own half. The result cannot be held as an indictment against Roy Hodgson’s wards, as they were up against a superior team who struck form.

Bolton recorded a brilliant 5-0 win over Stoke City in a home game, in match week 11. Coming into the game with 13 losses in their last 16 Premier League games, Bolton exacted revenge against Stoke who had beaten them by an identical score in April. Stoke had also put an end to Bolton’s FA Cup campaign, last season.

Bolton’s win was built on goals by Davies, Eagles and Klasnic, the last two getting braces. While Stoke appeared drained from their midweek Europa Cup game in tel Aviv, there was no denying Bolton’s positive intent in the game that could help them kickstart a flagging campaign.

Head to head, in the last 10 years, West Brom and Bolton have met in 20 league games, Bolton recording 7 wins to West Brom’s 2, with the remaining 11 matches drawn. The last time these teams met was in December 2010, a game hosted at Reebok Stadium and won by Bolton 2-0.

Manchester City is holding the reins of the Barclays with an advantage of eight goals over the Red Devils, after a triumph conquered by Yaya Toure.

The Manchester clubs will continue on war until their very last match of the campaign, since this round brought no changes on the top of the standings, for both sites triumphed on this round. Later on Sunday, Manchester United received the only Welsh club from the Premier League, Swansea City and as mentioned before defeated the visitors with two goals. The first one was from Paul Scholes in the 28′ and four minutes to the interval Ashley Young got in the score sheet as well. The clash ended up in 2-0 victory for the hosts, but the amount of goals clearly wasn’t enough to shorten the advantage City has in Goal Difference. However the win has left Ferguson optimistic about the chance his men have next Sunday, May 13th 2012, of acquiring their 20th title; though to obtain it the Red Devils need City to lose against QPR and or crush Sunderland with and advantage of at least 9 goals -which seems a little improbable to happen.

On the other hand Blackburn is the second club officially relegated to the 2012-13 Championship, after confronting Wigan on Monday 7th. The Latics certainly needed to beat the Rovers to be out of danger, for it was on the 17th spot, just 2 points above Bolton that remains 18th. Now Wigan is safe with 40 points two positions above and left Queens Park Rangers in the hot seat, waiting for the Sky Blues.

It’s Premier League match time at the Reebok Stadium as Bolton get set to host Chelsea in a second leg encounter on January 24.

The first leg hosted by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge was won 1-0 by the hosts on the back of Malouda’s strike on 61 minutes. It was a lacklustre game for the champions who appear to have forgotten how to win. They appeared clueless before the interval even as Gary Cahill was solid in the Bolton back-line and negated Drogba’s efforts to break through. Jaasklainen remained untested in the Bolton goal before the break.

Bolton dominated the first half but the Chelsea midfield appeared to come to life after the goal with Essien and Ramires impressive. Terry had another stand out performance as he denied clear scoring opportunities to Davies and Elmander. Ricketts and Petr Cech also squandered equalising opportunities for Bolton. Lampard’s return has been a boost for the struggling champions though the England midfielder has yet to get into his stride.

Bolton had reason to feel hard done by, after the linesman chose to ignore what the Trotters thought was an offside position by Drogba as the Ivorian striker collected the ball from Essien and transmitted it across the goal mouth for Malouda to stab it in. An equalising opportunity was lost when Holden’s shot hit Terry on the hand and no penalty was awarded by referee Lee Probert.

The win got Chelsea up to fourth place, but they clearly need to use the January window to make a couple of smart buys, if they want a serious tilt at retaining the title.

Head to head, Chelsea have dominated Bolton in the last 20 league games between the sides, recording a 14-1 lead, with 5 draws completing the tally.

On current form, with the champions struggling to get their campaign back on track, and Bolton hot contenders for a top six spot, this could be a very tight game.

With Setanta Sports seemingly fighting a losing battle against the economic downturn, what does it all mean for the distribution of the Premier League’s live UK television rights in the coming seasons?

At present, live Barclays Premier League TV rights are split into six packages, each consisting of 23 live matches. Therefore a total of 138 games from the league will be screened live on UK TV every season.

For the forthcoming 2009-10 season, BSkyB owns the rights for four of the six packages available, meaning that the British broadcaster will show 92 live matches next season.

The distribution of Live Premier League TV Rights:

2009-10 season
– BSkyB will show 92 live EPL matches
– New ESPN channel will show 46 live games

From 2010-11 season until 2013
– BSkyB will show 115 live EPL matches
– New ESPN channel will show the remaining 23 live games

The remaining two packages of 46 games, that Setanta was forced to surrender after failing to come up with the cash, were snapped up this week by Disney-owned American broadcaster, ESPN.

ESPN, who currently broadcast two channels on UK satellite television, are expected to announce the launch of a new channel to screen the newly-acquired live matches, that consumers will be able to purchase on top of their current Sky TV subscription.

The American media company is also expected to look to broadcast their new channel on other TV platforms such as Virgin Media.

But after the conclusion of the 2009-10 season, Sky will tighten its grip on the live games after it emerged that the company has already won an auction for another 23 match package, bringing the total number of live games on Sky to a hefty 115. Meanwhile, ESPN will show the remaining 23 games on its newly branded channel from 2010-11.

Finally, whilst one might assume that Setanta’s demise is in Sky’s favour, it could in fact be bad news for Rupert Murdoch’s company. Industry regulators demand that there must be a direct competitor to Sky as no single broadcaster are able to own all six packages.

This deal was agreed in 2005 with the European Commission, when it was ruled that Premier League television rights must be split between more than one broadcaster.

Chelsea Football Club now reportedly have the biggest wage bill in the English Premier League. The annual wage bill of £172 Million does not include new signings Fernando Torres, who has reportedly signed a contract worth £200,000 a week and £25 Million signing David Luiz, who both joined the club this week.

Premiership wages have been notoriously high in recent years and Chelsea’s wage bill is £40 Million above closest big spending rivals Manchester City. A more important consideration is the percentage of a clubs turnover which is spent on players wages. Chelsea spend a reported 82 percent of their turnover on wages, while Manchester City spend 106 percent, this is in stark contrast to other top clubs such as Manchester United, who spend 46 percent of their turnover on wages, while Arsenal spend 49 percent.

Several big name players left Chelsea during the summer of 2010, the departure of Michael Ballack, Juliano Belletti, Deco, Ricardo Carvalho and Joe Cole saved an annual £20m in wages and generated around £15 million in transfer fees. Despite this saving Chelsea have recently reported losses of £70.9m which was up £26.5m from the previous financial year, the addition of Torres and Luiz will add to significantly to their wage bill.

Under the new UEFA Financial Fair Play rules, which come into effect from the 2011-12 season, clubs must only spend on wages and other expenditure what they earn in ticket sales, merchandising and other commercial income. Effectively the club’s books will have to balance, failure to do so could ultimately lead to disqualification form European competitions such as the Champions League.

A potential safety net exists within the rules, any players whose contracts were agreed before 1 June 2010 will be exempt, if these rules were applied to Chelsea for the last financial year they would have actually been shown to make a financial profit. The rules won’t be tightened until 2016 when all players wages will be taken into consideration, even then if a club is making a financial loss and they can prove there is an improvement in the trend of their finances, they may escape punishment by the governing body.

EPL has started for the third week so far…. Have you had any clue that which team will dominate this season? Is it going to be Chelsea who have a red hot start at the early stage of the season, or Manchester United who have yet to show their real strength, or Young Arsenal team who have lost one match last weekend but relived almost immediately after the young players were given a stern words from their coach.

From the immediate rebound performance of Arsenal, I am very positive that the young players are surely the hot contender for the English Premier Title this season. The young age and energy are the strength of this young team. They can beat any team in the league at their good form. However, they have to be focus which is their weakest link. Most of the players have played together for quite sometime and can gel well. After the loss to Fullham last week, they have learned the lesson well and beaten Twente in Champion League Group match during the mid week followed by a emphatic win over New Castle 3 – 0 this weekend.

Chelsea, on the other hand, has shown sign of fatigue after three matches. The first match was a fantastic one with 4 -0 win over Portsmouth, followed by another win 1 – 0 at Wigan but they only managed to draw with Tottenham 1 -1 at home this weekend. Well, thing will not look good for them if they continue to lose point like that at home…..

Manchester United has to decide their emphasis on which title they want….The mid week result did not go well for them when they lost to St. Petersburg 1 -2 in their Champion League Group match. It is not going to be easy to get the double titles again in this season.

At this early stage, it is still too early to predict which team will be the winner for EPL this season. However, if I have to pick one team it has to be Arsenal to win this season!
