  • Arsene Wenger – 1,000 Not Out

Arsene Wenger’s 1,000th game in charge of Arsenal may have been one of his most disappointing, losing 6-0 to Chelsea but he has had some great successes.

Here we take a look back at some of the highs & lows of Wenger’s Arsenal career.

Wenger was appointed as Arsenal manager on the 30th September 1996 and earned the nickname «The Professor» due to his very thoughtful approach to the game.

Throughout his Arsenal career Wenger has religiously stuck to his principles and played football the way he believes it to be played.

In his first full season on charge Arsenal won the League, beating Manchester United into second place, and FA Cup, defeating Newcastle 2-0 in the final to win the double.

Arsenal finished second in the table behind Manchester United for the next three seasons as the rivalry between the two clubs, managers (Wenger & Ferguson) and captains (Vierra & Keane) intensified.

During this period Wenger made a number of signings, including Ljungberg, Henry, Pires and Wiltord as he attempted to build a side capable of winning the League and playing football his way.

The 2001-02 season proved to be one of Wenger’s most successful at the club and also saw the arrival of Sol Campbell on a free transfer from North London rivals Tottenham.

They comfortably won the League, scoring in every game, as they finished seven points clear of Liverpool and 10 points clear of rivals Manchester United. The title was won at Old Trafford, with Wiltord scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory, making the league success even sweeter for both Wenger and the clubs supporters.

They also won the FA Cup, defeating Chelsea 2-0 in the final, to claim the double for the second time in four years.

The 2002-03 season saw Manchester United win back the title as they finished five points above The Gunners who had led the race for large parts of the season.

Wenger’s Arsenal side did retain the FA Cup, the first team to do so since Tottenham in 1982, defeating Southampton 1-0 in the final.

The 2003-04 campaign was arguably the greatest under Arsene Wenger’s management despite losing in the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and League Cup and quarter-final of the Champions League.

The Premier League campaign saw Wenger’s team create history as they became the first side to go unbeaten in a 38 game season and only the second to achieve this in the top flight (Preston being the first in 1888-89).

With a record of 26 victories and 12 draws the team became known as «The Invincibles» and won the title finishing 11 points clear of second placed Chelsea.

Arsenal won their fourth FA Cup trophy under the management of Arsene Wenger in the 2004-05 season, defeating Manchester United 6-5 on penalties in the final.

This victory came shortly before Arsene Wenger’s 500th game in charge of the club.

Wenger’s next 500 games have not proved to be as successful with the club failing to win any major trophies despite coming close on a number of occasions, most notably when finishing runners-up to Barcelona in the Champions League final.

Kieran Gibbs red card in Wenger’s 1000th game was Arsenal’s 101st under Wenger’s stewardship but arguably the most costly was Jens Lehmann’s in the Champions League final.

There are many pundits and fans that put Arsenal’s failure to win any silverware in the last nine years down to Wenger’s reluctance to compete in the transfer market and Arsenal’s inability to hold onto their best players.

Since the 2005 FA Cup victory Arsenal have reluctantly sold Patrick Vierra, Ashley Cole, Thierry Henry, Alexander Hleb, Mathieu Flamini, Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure, Gael Clichy, Cesc Fabreras, Samir Nasri, Robin van Persie and Alex Song.

With Arsenal now out of the 2013-14 title race after 1,000 games and nearly 18 years in charge is it now time for Arsenal to say thank you Mr Wenger but we would like a new manager to take things from here?

    Thanks for reading.

  • Chelsea FC – Cut Spending and Look to Youth

Since Roman Abramovich became the new owner of Chelsea Football Club in 2003 they have been renowned for being the big spenders in the English Premier League.

From 2004-2009 there was an estimated gross spend of over £325 million on players, although £245 million has been recouped on sales of players during that time and notably during the 2009 season there was a profit on players sales (verses expenditure) of an estimated £68 million.

Obviously transfer fees are only half the story, players wages, are notoriously expensive, Chelsea spent a reported £142million on players salaries last year alone. This massive expenditure is offset somewhat by ticket sales, merchandise and replica shirt sales, advertising, television payments and indeed prize money for winning the premier league, estimated to be in the region of £15million.

Chelsea continue to maintain they are in a strong financial position and are reported to be on target to ‘break even’ within the next few years.

Since the takeover by Abramovich, the investment in football terms has pay dividends, and Chelsea have enjoyed a very successful era; they have won eight major trophies, including the Premier League 3 times, the FA Cup 3 times and the League Cup twice – making them the most successful English team in the last seven years.

Chelsea are not the only big spenders in the Premier League, and there are growing concerns about the financial position of some football clubs. In addition to the huge spending by some clubs, this financial power is also seen by some as an unfair advantage, if a club has the backing of wealthy businessmen or consortiums.

Another issue which is causing concern is the perceived lack of ‘home grown’ talent, which may adversely affect the national team as well as the clubs, by the massive influx of quality foreign players into the Premier League.

The football governing bodies have now taken action. From the beginning of the 2010/11 season The Premier League will introduce a squad cap of 25 players and a quota on ‘home grown’ players. From this season, clubs must include eight home-grown players out of a squad of 25.

A home-grown player is defined as being registered with the club for a minimum period of three entire seasons before the age of twenty-one.

Chelsea seem to be ahead of the game here, by moving to their new training ground in Cobham, Surrey in 2004 and opening their new multi-million pound state of the-art training ground in 2007, which includes all the latest in training, rehabilitation, medical, pitch and media technology and this is also the home of the youth team and Chelsea academy.

Cobham is home to the Under 9s through to the Under 18s, all the way through to the Chelsea first team. The academy is overseen by Chelsea sporting director Frank Arnesen who was appointed in 2005 and is well known for his ability to develop young players.

Chelsea already have several academy players on the verge of breaking into the first team. The long term strategy obviously has to be the development of talented young players rather than paying huge amounts for older players from other teams, this will also ensure future financial stability.

Developing home grown players is considered to be a vitally important goal for Chelsea. Cobham gives us the perfect platform for that, It is a general consensus that the new Premier League rules on home-grown players will benefit the long-term future of football.

Another issue for Chelsea are the huge salaries of the players, From the 2012-13 season clubs entering European competition will have to prove they are financially stable, and will only be allowed to spend on player transfers and wages what they earn in revenue, this is another factor that will prompt the development of youth team players to reduce massive transfer costs.

Prior to the start of this season, Chelsea have released several high profile players, who were reported to be amongst the highest earners at the club, it will be interesting to observe the developments and wage structures over the next few years, again, I believe Chelsea are ahead of the game, and will continue to be a major presence in English, European and World football.

  • The Sacking Of Avram Grant!

I don’t think this came as a surprise to anybody.

Avram Grant has been sacked as Chelsea manager less than a week after he led Chelsea to their first ever Champions league league appearance.

Avram Grant was never a popular choice at the bridge and his tactics came under scrutiny more than ones especially after the Carling cup loss to Spurs after taking a lead through David Drogba’s splendid free kick (although Paul Robinson should have done better).

Avram did well in my reckoning although managers are judged according to the trophies they won, and he failed to win any. He was a penalty kick away from winning the UCL but their «strong man» John Terry bottled it.

I have a feeling he would still have been sacked even if John Terry had put away that penalty. Most Chelseans are glad to see his back.

    So who’s taking over?

    – Guus Hiddinks

    – Frank Riijkaard

    – Sven Goran Ericsson

    – Ten Cate

    – Jose Mourinho

    – Roberto Mancini

    The list is endless.

I have a feeling Peter Kenyon already has a candidate in mind but he wants the UCL furore to cool off before getting back in the news.

The job of the new manager is clear. Get rid of the unhappy players and bring in quality players to fortify the squad. The signings made at the beginning of the season by former manager Jose Mourinho were not up to scratch.

The right back position has been a problem for Chelsea so the signing of José Bosingwa is a good one especially if you consider that he can also play in midfield.

They also need quality wingers. Florent Malouda has not really settled in well. I heard Barcelona are ready to take him on so that will be good for all parties. Joe Cole is not a natural winger and should be brought back to the middle.

The central midfield in good as it is. Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Mikel Obi, Claude Makelele should do the job for them.

Chelsea should be back stronger next season.

  • UEFA Champions League Gameweek 6 Review

The UEFA champions league enters into the final group games on Tuesday 9 December

We will start off by taking a look at

    Group A

Chelsea Vs CFR Cluj Game predictions : Chelsea to win 2:0

Chelsea at home should have been strongly fancied favouries but since losing to Liverpool and Arsenal in the last 4 weeks, their home record in the English Premiership has gone. The Romanians will come to Stamford Bridge with nothing to play for. Bottom of the group without the chance of taking 3rd place they may see this as a practise game.

Roma Vs Bordeaux Game predictions : Roma to win 3:1

Roma top off the group have all to play for. They are viying for top spot with Chelsea. The italians are past masters are grinding out the results will be favouries to top the group come 22:00.

    Group B

Panathinaikos Vs Anorthosis Game predictions : PAN to win 1:0

This is a very close group with 3 teams capable of going through to the knock out stages. The Greeks will fancy going in to the last 16 and playing in front of a partizan home crowd they will be expected to win.

Bremen Vs Internazionale Game predictions : Inter to win 1:0

With Bremen out of the running for the last 16, Inter Milan should clinch top spot. Although an Inter victory should not be taken for granted.

    Group C

Basel Vs Sporting Game predictions : Draw 1:1

With the group already wrapped up there is nothing to play for. The swiss team having just got 1 point in the league this time round will hope for a home victory to boost sprits

Barcelona Vs Shakhtar Game predictions : Barca to win 4:0

This should be a practice game for Barca, they will probably rest all the main players and give some playing time for the fringe players

    Group D

PSV Vs Liverpool Game predictions : Draw 0:0

With Liverpool and Atlético grabbing the top 2 spots PSV will have to settle to trying to get 3rd spot from Marseille. Liverpool missing a hamstrung Toress are toothless and will be lucky to get a draw from the game.

Marseille Vs Atlético Game predictions : Aletico to win 2:1

Although Atletico are away in france for their last champions league game they should be confident of winning the game and thereby getting top spot in the group.

  • English Football

In 1863 the first set of rules for association football were established. Those rules were the influence for the Laws of the Game. Football is a National sport in England. England has more than 40,000 football clubs and millions and million of spectators at those games every season. England has close to 100 professional football clubs, the Football League, which is the oldest national league, the Football Association, which is the oldest governing body, and the most popular league in all of the worlds leagues the Premier League which is known as «the World’s greatest show.»

From back in medieval times football has been played in England. The first world football club was a team known as the Gymnastic Society of London which was developed in the eighteenth century. In the year 1848 the first rules were drawn up at Cambridge University and they were called the Cambridge rules. Many codes were developed with these rules which included association football.

England’s top football clubs decided to break away from the Football League, which formed the Premier League in 1992. The Premier League sits at the top of the English football pyramid with promotion to and from it with the Championship. Currently the league consists of 20 teams, each facing each other twice a season (home and away matches) The top four placed teams at the end of the season earn qualification to the UEFA (Europe) Champions League, a competition with significant financial benefits, the next highest placed team qualify to the less glamorous Europa League. The three teams that finish at the bottom end of the League over the course of a season face relegation to the football championship league.

Reserve leagues were created in 1999. They are called The Premier Reserve League. The Premier League is divided into two leagues, Premier Reserve League South and Premier Reserve League North which is designed to decrease the travel demands on players. Support at reserve team games tends to be minimal

In 1915 the Football Combination was formed and it has thirty teams. This division is splint into Wales, Cast, and Central. These teams are primarily reserve teams. There are also professional teams in this league. Some of the teams can enter the race for the Combination Challenge Cup.

England does have football that is not a part of a league. Those are the teams that play in the organized league competitions but are not actually a part of a league. However these are none too common and are the teams are not officially recognised and are not members of the Football Association of England. Within English football there are also many amateur leagues and youth leagues. The amateur leagues make football one of the biggest participation sports in England. The youth leagues provide an opportunity for the next generation of football fans to develop a love for the game but are also the breeding ground for the next generation of star players as professional clubs employ many youth scouts to visit youth teams looking for talented youngsters.

  • EPL Season 2010-2011 – Round 1 of Matches

The English Premier League resume next weekend after about 3 month break. But some of the players are involved in the FIFA World Cup and have very little rest. The coach needs to freshen up things by rotating the players so that they have enough rest. The first matches of the season see the titanic clash between Liverpool and Arsenal. Apart from that, we will also see the last season surprise team Tottenham Hotspur taking on Manchester City. Tottenham beat City to fourth placing to claim the final champion league spot. City with the financial support from Abu Dhabi Group are expected to produce a strong challenge towards the Premiership title.

    Full fixtures of round 1:

    Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City

Aston Villa vs West Ham United

    Blackburn Rovers vs Everton

    Bolton Wanderers vs Fulham

    Sunderland vs Birmingham

    Wigan vs Blackpool

    Wolvehampton Wanderers vs Stoke City

    Chelsea vs West Bromwich Albion

    Liverpool vs Arsenal

    Manchester United vs Newcastle

Chelsea begins their title defense with a home game against West Bromwich. They should not have any problem beating the visitor. Manchester United is expected to defeat Newcastle United at Old Trafford. There should not be any doubt that the main focus of round 1 of EPL season 2010/2011 is the match between Liverpool and Arsenal. Liverpool is looking for a good start after a disastrous previous season. Arsenal would like to show to everyone that they are one of favorite to win the title. Arsenal fans are happy and relief that Cesc Fabregas has committed to stay at the club for yet another season. He is the pillar and most important player of the team. The game most likely to end in a tie and both team will get a point from it.
