  • Champions League Semi Final Liverpool, 1 Chelsea, 1

For Liverpool the impressive performers were Fabio Aurelio, Martin Skrtel, Dirk Kuyt and especially Xavi Alonso.

The 1st chance of the 1st half was set up by the excellent Xavi Alonso as his pass found Dirk Kuyt in space but his chest control was not as good as it should be and brought out a comfortable save from Petr Cech. Joe Cole had Chelsea’s best chance as he was put through by Frank Lampard but he was caught in 2 minds and he fluffed his chance.

Chelsea felt they should have had a penalty when it looked like Jamie Carragher had brought down Drogba in the box but this being the champions league and involving Liverpool, nothing was given.

Liverpool then had another chance when Steve Gerrard played Fernando Torres through but Cech was able to smother his effort. Just as it looked like it was going to be a goalless 1st half, Alonso’s quick thinking from a free kick found Kuyt, his cross was intercepted by Lampard but he hesitated and was robbed by Javier Mascherano and Dirk Kuyt with Mascherano making a complete mess of his attempted cross but it fell kindly for Kuyt as Claude Makele made a big error with his attempted clearance and Kuyt put the ball between Cech’s legs to make it 1-0.

Liverpool came out with purpose in the 2nd half and played some good football but could not create too many chances but just as it seemed it was going to be yet another 1-0 home leg win between these 2 sides; John Arne Riise decided in all his wisdom to head the ball instead of clearing with his leg and put the ball into his own net with seconds to go in 5 minutes of extra-time.

    Ratings

    Liverpool

Beppe Reina 6 He was not duly tested but was solid throughout and stood no chance with the goal

Alvaro Arbeloa 5 He was poor throughout and was culpable for the equalizer as he allowed Kalou to put in a speculative cross.

Fabio Aurellio 6 He had a decent enough game until a groin injury put paid to his participation.

Jamie Carragher 6 He was there again with this last ditch tackles but was very luck to escape without giving a penalty and yellow card that would have ruled him out of the 2nd leg.

Martin Skrtel 6.5 He was up to the task of keeping Drogba quiet and did not put a foot wrong all night. He was the best defender on view.

Dirk Kuyt 6 He gives you far more quantity than he does quality and did not see too much on the ball in the 2nd half.

Javier Mascherano 6 He had a better 2nd half but he is not good on the ball and he should take a bit of blame for the equalizer as he did not stop the cross coming in.

Xavi Alonso 6.5 He was Liverpool’s best player on the night but his 2nd half was not as good as his 1st.

Ryan Babel 5.5 He showed glimpses of his potential but again it was another unconvincing display before he was replaced in the 2nd half

Steve Gerrard 5.5 This is the Gerrard that always shows up in games of this magnitude

Fernando Torres 4 He was extremely poor and the chances he had, he fluffed them as he kept on diving trying to win cheap free kicks. Pathetic display from Liverpool’s player of the year.

    Substitutes

John Arne Riise 3 His own goal was just ridiculous. He should have cleared the ball with his right leg but decided to head it into its own net.

Yossi Benayoun5 He did not do anything worthwhile when he was on the pitch.

    Chelsea

Petr Cech 7 He produced some very good saves with the pick of the bunch being a very good tip over from Gerrard in the 2nd half. He was the man of the match.

Paolo Ferreira 5.5 He did not do too much in a good or bad sense.

Ashley Cole 5.5 He made a few mistakes and was not able to go forward as he would have liked but made a vital block from Alonso.

John Terry 6 He made some vital tackles but once in a while the thug in him comes out as he had an unsavory situation when Torres was on the floor he seemed to step on him.

Ricardo Carvalho 6.5 He provided his usual panache in defence and was not found wanting in any department as he helped to keep Torres very quiet.

Florin Malouda 5 He was not effective at all even when he had a good chance, he dithered too long and allowed Mascherano to make a fine block.

Claude Makele 5.5 He did what he normally does but father time is catching up on him.

Frank Lampard 6 He was better in the 1st half and had a very good chance in the 2nd half but his pocket was picked by Carragher.

Michael Ballack 6 He just glides around the place with a lot of class but he did not see too much of the ball from Chelsea’s point of view.

Joe Cole 4 In all candor he was hopeless as he gave the ball away cheaply, did not support Drogba at all and was found wanting in all areas.

Didier Drogba 6 He had a decent game as he was always a constant threat to Skrtel and Carragher but his histrionics were getting annoying.

    Substitutes

Salomon Kalou 6 His great cross in the dying minutes for the equalizer may have just saved Chelsea’s season.

Nicholas Anelka Not sure if he touched the ball during his time on the pitch.

  • What Is Wrong With Boas’s Chelsea?

Chelsea has been under heavy criticism lately for performing badly against the big teams such as Arsenal and Manchester United, losing both games and more against neighbors Queens Park Rangers. Is something really wrong with Chelsea or is it Andre Villas Boas?

Fernando Torres is not used to Chelsea’s play style; back in Liverpool Fernando Torres was the main player when it came to counter-attacks especially with Steven Gerrard behind him to assist with quick passes. Chelsea is currently playing a possession game which keeps the opposites defenders in their box and closes down spaces for players like Torres. It is obviously impossible for the entire team to change their strategy for one player so he needs to adapt quickly or it’s over for him. Fernando is already 27 so he only has 3-4 years where he can excel in and the 50 million paid by Roman Abramovich will keep haunting him unless he does.

Didier Drogba is not the same player anymore, the forward that scared the Gooners, Red Devils and all of Europe has finally grown old; it was going to happen eventually especially with the Ivorian international turning 33 earlier this year. His recent performances in the EPL have shown that he has grown too slow and old for the premier league.

Bosingwa is very weak defensively, despite his speed and accurate crosses Jose Bosingwa is blamed by many for the blues defensive errors; he is quick to leave his position and dash forward and is frequently beaten by the opposite forwards. Several analysts called out for Brainislav Ivanovic to replace Bosingwa in his position as he is much better defensively and could do better for Chelsea but Boas has showed his trust in Bosingwa by constantly starting him.

Florent Malouda, Kalou and Anelka don’t have anything to offer anymore, the trio has achieved much for Chelsea but it is clear that they are no longer suited for the club if they are to compete with the big guns of Europe. Andre Villas Boas has already hinted at Kalou’s exit as he has not been included in a premier league or a UCL game in some time but Anelka and Malouda’s fates are still unknown.

Terry is still getting hammered by the media over racism claims, many have noticed that the John terry playing for Chelsea is not the same player that he used to be; and with the English media discussing the investigations of the case in every single aspect it is no secret that John Terry is suffering from lack of concentration which caused him to be removed from England’s starting squad against Spain.

  • HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs Sunderland (5-1) | Carabao Cup | Nketiah (3), Pepe, Patino

HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs Sunderland (5-1) | Carabao Cup | Nketiah (3), Pepe, Patino

Eddie Nketiah scored his first senior hat-trick and Charlie Patino scored on his debut as we sealed our place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a comprehensive victory against Sunderland.

We came into the match in fine form in the competition, having scored 11 times without concession – and Mikel Arteta picked a mix of youth and experience in his line up.

While much of the pre-match talk centred around the inclusion of 18-year-old Charlie Patino in the matchday squad for the first time, the starting XI had a job to do and they set about it instantly.

Within five minutes Nketiah had headed a fine Cedric cross over the bar, and it set a theme as we focused many of our attacks down that flank.

Our Portuguese right back soon found Flo Balogun at the back post with another accurate delivery, but the striker headed wide – and then saw a low shot saved moments later.

Cedric continued to get forward at will into dangerous areas – and he played a key role in our opener, sending in a fine corner that Rob Holding directed towards goal, and while the header was saved, Nketiah was there to force it over the line.

We doubled our advantage not long afterwards, Cedric combining with Nicolas Pepe on the overlaps before cutting the ball back to the Ivorian forward in the area, and his shot flew into the roof of the net. It was a fine way for Pepe to mark his 100th game in our colours.

It was plain sailing at this point, but Sunderland got themselves back into the game with a well-worked move that saw Nathan Broadhead race in behind our defence and beat Bernd Leno.

Our goalkeeper had to be alert a few minutes later to push a goalbound effort from Carl Winchester around the post, and while Emile Smith Rowe went close at the other end there was no further troubling of the scoresheet before the interval.

But just four minutes into the second half we extended our advantage again as Nuno Tavares got into space down the left and delivered a fine cross to the near post, for Nketiah to finish confidently for his second of the night.

The visitors continued to come forward and came close with a curling effort from Elliot Embleton that struck the outside of the post.

Nketah completed his hat-trick in fine style, backheeling home after superb work from Martin Odegaard and Nicolas Pepe.

Patino came on to warm applause as the 886th player to represent the club with 10 minutes remaining, and claimed a fairytale debut goal in injury time as he poked home Pepe’s cross.

It was a fantastic moment, but the night belonged to Nketiah who walked off with the match ball having sealed our place in the semi-finals.

  • Talisman Hazard, Back Where He Belongs

For Eden Hazard, the first season at Chelsea was supposed to be difficult, given the Premier League’s immense physical demands and his modest stature at 5’8″. Hazard though announced himself in a respectable way with 13 goals in the season. The next season got him 17 goals plus the PFA Young Player of the Year award. The season after, he scored another 19 and won the PFA player of the Year award. Both seasons he was unanimously voted Chelsea’s Player of the Year.

Three seasons with the West London outfit, and Hazard was a superstar. His dribbling skills were mesmerizing, his ability to outfox defenders with ease was a treat to watch. He could score at will, his pace was amazing and his set-pieces were brilliant.

Indeed, terminologies like ‘the next Messi’ and ‘a future Ballon d’or’ were heard when referring to Hazard. And while Hazard did find himself crashing on the football turf often, courtesy of some aggressive defending, his form took an abruptly similar turn before long.

Playing the 2015-16 season for the defending champions of the Premier League, Hazard lost possession often, and it looked like his heart was not in the game. He tried switching it up but nothing came of it. His tally of just six goals bore a symbiotic relationship to Chelsea’s own decline over the season as they endured a lowly 10th-place finish. Unfortunately for the Belgian, he bore the brunt of the criticism from the media, former players and pundits.

They said he was a ‘flash in the pan’, ‘weakling’ and ‘overrated’. PSG and Real Madrid generously offered to give him an out. West London was not a happy place.

All that was about to change.

The new season brought in a new manager from Italy Antonio Conte and a new formation that did wonders for Chelsea, and indeed, Hazard.

As part of the tip of the unusual 3-4-3, Hazard found all the boost he needed. With his hunger back, he tore apart opposition defenders, looking stronger and sharper. He was free-scoring once more and his passes and first touches were precise and incisive.

Fuelled by his 14 goals so far presently the West Londoners sit pretty atop the league table with a bit of daylight between them and their nearest opponents. He has definitely shut all the doubters and stormed his way back into elite status. Those Messi comparisons and Ballon d’or statements are back in circulation.

A heck of a turnaround indeed for the Belgian wizard!

  • How to Pick the Best Away Bets For the Australian Football Pools

Many people do not realise that the Australian Football results are quite different to UK and European results. There are subtle patterns which can only be identified by digging deeply into the results and performance statistics. The smart punter can use this information to help pick the most likely away bets.

    Strange Patterns

Now, analysis shows that there are a number of strange patterns of results. Teams which lose at home are then much more likely to win away on their next match than would be the case in Europe. This ‘bounceback’ effect is quite noticeable.

    Win/Draw/Lose Runs

Runs of wins, draws and losses tend to be longer than in the UK. As I write this article, the following form is evident:

Western Australia Premier Division, Joondalup, last 4 matches DDDD

Western Australia Division 1, SW Phoenix, last 4 matches WWWW

Western Australia Division 1, Queens Park, last 4 matches LLLL

South Australia State League, Northern District, last 4 matches WWWW

Tasmania North Premier League, Burnie, last 4 matches LLLL

Tasmania North Premier League, Launceston, last 4 matches LLLL

There are several other examples on this coupon. The reasons for this are mainly due to the fact that the range of performance difference within a given league is massive. Playing standards of the leading teams in a league are way beyond those of the lower teams. In a given match, you might see a team of performance rating 200 playing a team rated at 7. This is clearly going to be one sided.

How Does this Help Us with Away Bets?

We check the form ratings of the teams and can immediately identify a couple of dozen matches as going to be one sided, and maybe a dozen of these which are likely to be Aways. We check these for ‘Home Loss in last match/Away match next’ – these are a good indicator of Aways.

We then look more closely at the remaining matches and identify further ‘Home Loss last match/Away match next’ teams, and if the opposition is not far ahead in terms of performance rating (in which case they would be in our previous list above), then mark these as likely Aways. These are lower probability Aways.

    The Bookies Know This

Obviously, the bookies are aware of these quirks and that is why the pools companies look for more Aways on Australian coupons. In the UK coupons, the pools companies offer a ‘4 Aways’ pool, but for Australian football they have been looking for more Away matches.

    How Do We Cover This?

One way is to take the fixed odds betting and place say an ‘Any six aways from 10’ bet with a bookie. This is in fact 210 separate bets – and not all bookies will do this. Taking say 7 from 10 reduces this to 120 bets, or 8 from 10 gives 45 bets. Also, the minimum stake a bookie will take is obviously a big factor in the overall cost.

    Finally

To make all this work, you have to have access to a solid performance rating system so that you can reliably narrow down your list of likely Away win matches.
