  • Time to Learn Another Major Language or Two!

On Sunday, the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia reached a grand finale with France hoisting the coveted gold trophy after beating Croatia 4-2. And soon the new season of the English Premier League will kick off as are other leagues in Europe. For soccer lovers, these are exciting times!

What is of more interest to me though is how all the transnational players that ply their trade in these lucrative leagues communicate effectively. I mean how do their coaches manage to get the message across on the training field to all these players of different nationalities? Could it be that a player that speaks many languages has more chances for success in these cutthroat competitive leagues than those who don’t?

Multilingualism gives one an edge over others
Oh yes, multilingualism gives one an edge over others. Arsene Wenger who was at the helm of Arsenal FC for 22 years became hugely successful not only because of his coaching nous but also because of his ability to speak many languages. Monsieur Wenger speaks six languages fluently: French, English, Japanese, German, Italian and Spanish. This ability helped him to transmit his ideas clearly and easily to the players who could not speak English. For example, when he signed Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona in 2003, the latter didn’t speak or understand a word of English. Thus Wenger always interacted with him in Spanish. He also encouraged him to learn English and by the time Fabregas left the club, he was bilingual; very fluent in English and Spanish.

Wenger’s realization that the ability to speak many languages helps players to bond and understand the world and football philosophy better saw him advocate for language learning in Arsenal’s youth setup. The benefits from this quickly spilled over so much that everyone knows about the «Arsenal way», which is basically about Arsenal’s synergy; Arsenal players having a bond akin to one close family as well allowing their feet to speak a language of their own on the field by playing quick, beautiful and aesthetic football that is hard to imitate.

Also the fact that football managers and players that are multilingual have been hugely successful wherever they have plied their trade shows that speaking many languages is a huge plus. For example, Pep Guardiola who has been very successful in Spain, Germany and England as a manager speaks German, English, Catalan, Spanish and Italian. Jose Mourinho who is also one of the most successful football managers speaks Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian and English fluently.

Cristiano Ronaldo who has four times won the Fifa Ballon d’Or as the best player in the world speaks Portuguese, Spanish and English, whereas Manchester United star Romelu Lukaku who was born in Belgium but has Congolese roots is fluent in six languages: Dutch, French, English, Spanish, Portuguese and Swahili.

All these coaches and players are hugely successful because their ability to speak many languages helps them to easily receive and internalize messages. It gives them that extra edge and boosts their confidence. They can easily settle into many geographical realms and feel at home, thanks to their ability to easily interact with the natives of those areas.

As people continue to intermarry and travel, being multilingual becomes a necessary skill that comes with many opportunities. Moreover, many countries today have more than one official national language, thus those unable to communicate in at least two or more major languages such as English, Chinese, Spanish, Arabic or Hindi, will soon be left behind in a world that gets more complex and competitive with every passing day. However, translation companies have also kicked in to save the day with services like Somali translation services, Yoruba translation Services, Malagasy translation services, Africa Conference Interpreters among many others.

Tielemans viert terugkeer met tweeklapper – Hoogtepunten Premier League speeldag 16

Het werd een weekend waarin niemand van de top drie in de Premier League punten liet liggen. Leider Man. City won met het kleinste verschil van Wolverhampton, eerste achtervolger Chelsea had twee penalty’s nodig tegen Leeds en ook Liverpool deed het zuinig, dankzij een penaltydoelpunt van Salah. Ook Man.

  • The Role of the League Brand on Marketing

Sports leagues and teams have strong existing structures with brands. As such, the decisions by the league management works towards promoting both the league brand and the individual teams. Sports consumers value the professional spectator sports sector as they are the primary reason stakeholders in business have interests in investing, gain income for the league as well as the teams through indirect or direct consumption behaviors. Therefore, it is the league’s best interest to help the teams generate consumption and maximize their revenues, ensuring the league and individual team’s long-term viability

Relationship of teams and the league

Sports brand research indicates that professional teams and leagues have different but complementary brand characteristics. From the consumer point of view, leagues and teams have unique benefits and attributes representing the core set of mental association attached to a brand. Every brand attachment is conceptually distinct. However, the league plays the role of a master brand, creating a formal relationship where the teams play as a set of sub-brands. The symbiotic relationship from this structure is a new concept of sports brand structure, where both team and league-wide specific marketing activities influence the game attendance and merchandise sales as well as media consumption. The relationship is intuitive. However, the researchers are yet to investigate the influence of the league brand and its essential ties as well as impacts on consumer behavior towards individual teams.

    Different league structures

The differences arising from different ownerships significantly influence the fundamental relationship between teams and leagues. At times, the league acts as franchise providing the framework where teams compete and work as franchises providing the core product generating income. This formal relationship is on a franchise basis or license contract, where the knowledge and resources are provided to ensure the maintenance of the required standards and quality. The other structure is where the leagues function in a single entity structure, and the league owns the players and while the teams are the investors. A good example is a major league ultimate in the United States. The other structure, the owners of the teams are the leagues’ shareholders with franchise contracts. The national basketball league in the USA is a good example. The fourth structure is like the English premier league, where leagues function as a governing body that offers teams membership to compete for a period using relegation and promotion system.

Regardless of the ownership system, leagues officiate tournament where teams compete, oversee strategic management, govern all the parties involved and manage the marketing such as promotion and change of rule. As such, professional sports teams cannot operate without the coordination provided by the leagues. Moreover, teams can utilize the brand building knowledge of league organization and use the league brand to avail their precise information on the team quality to consumers. Therefore, leagues avail team with a platform for branding and develop a customer base

    Sponsorship

Research has consistently indicated that investing in sponsorship has positive impacts on brand image, brand awareness, brand royalty as well as the organizations financial performance. Therefore such support requires maintenance and nurturing to ensure the achievement of the objectives. Therefore, it’s necessary to understand the prediction of sponsoring dissolution to monitor any indicators of such ending to the benefit of both parties in the partnership

    Factors affecting sponsorship

There are factors that can cause sponsorship dissolution, such as farm-related factors, the influence of economy and property related factors. These factors can negatively or positively influence the duration of the sponsorship.

    Economic conditions

In the context of marketing models such as sponsorship, the economic conditions of sponsor home country dictate the nature of support, hence the evidence of the impacts of the financial condition affecting the decision related to the investment. Therefore, a diverse economic situation in the sponsor mother country can affect the sponsorship duration negatively

    Property associated factors

Property associated factors such as attractiveness of event locations can influence the sponsorship duration. Usually, the sponsor creates market awareness through sponsoring. Therefore the expectation is such that the consumer base of the next host country indicates the market potential will affect the sponsorship duration positively. The risk of doing business in a state with a lower variable people purchasing power will discourage any investor. Hence, the total number of consumers and their potential purchasing power together with the risk of operating a business in a particular country, may influence in the perception of the brand investors as far as the attractiveness of the market is concerned, and can eventually have a potential impact to determine the duration of the sponsorship

    The market influence

The market influence of the host country can impact the duration of the sponsorship. When a country or a region host mega-events, the image and the pride shine, and the local coverage and sales increases due to coverage and awareness by the short-term interest of the big event. However, for the sponsorship to be long-term and sustainable, the market uptake has to persist after the event, otherwise, the support might not be viable. Firm-related factors such as leadership stability influence the duration of the partnership. Many farms have planned succession plans where CEO change plans are years in advance. As such, they can implement long-term organization strategies even when leadership changes occur. However, leadership change is not always predictable, and they can influence the present operations and policy. For instance, unforeseen events like death, company financial struggle or board members dissatisfaction. Change in top leadership can impact the company’s commitment towards long-term partnerships and affects the duration of the sponsorship negatively

  • Chelsea FC Season Review 2010-11

After a highly successful first season under new manager Carlo Ancelotti, in which the Blues completed their first ever Premier League winners and FA Cup winners double, there were naturally high expectations for the 2010-11 season. The Blues were many peoples favourite to win the Premier League title again.

Chelsea started the season as they had finished the last, in emphatic style, as the beat West Brom 6-0 with Didier Drogba scoring a hat-trick. The Blues looked cohesive and composed and the following week they recorded another 6-0 victory away at Wigan, winning their first five consecutive Premier League games, by the end of October Chelsea had won eight of the first ten League games, including a victory against Arsenal, and they were showing great form, even at this stage, many thought they would easily retain the Premier League title they had won the season before.

Unfortunately the Blues lost their way in the November following injuries to John Terry and Frank Lampard and the many attributed their sudden loss of form to the unexpected departure of assistant coach Ray Wilkins who left the club at the beginning of November. Achieving only two victories from their next eleven games, saw Chelsea endure their worst run of form for over ten seasons, which included a 0-3 home defeat against Sunderland.

January saw the arrival of £50 million Fernando Torres from Liverpool, which became a record transfer fee for a player between two English clubs. Unfortunately it wasn’t the dream move that everyone had hoped for as his poor form which he experienced at Liverpool continued at Chelsea. Torres only scored one goal and often seemed to struggle with the Blues formations and style of play, often cutting a lonely figure on the pitch.

By the time Chelsea faced Manchester United at the beginning of March they could have fallen 15 points behind the Reds in the race for the title, but a heroic second half performance saw the Blues secure a dramatic 2-1 victory. Seven wins from their next eight league games saw Chelsea make a late push for title glory, which would have secured one of the most dramatic Premier League titles in recent history. Defeat against United at Old Trafford brought their amazing run to an end and sealed their fate of finishing in second place in the league.

Chelsea were also beaten by Manchester United in the Champions League quarter finals, a defeat that effectively sealed the fate of manager Carlo Ancelotti, and he was sacked moments after the final game of the season against Everton

The Blues will now search for a new coach and look to rebuild their squad for next season and speculation on the future of some of the teams older players will also be in focus, as Chelsea will again strive for domestic honours and the elusive Champions league glory.

  • HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs West Ham (2-0) | Premier League | Martinelli, Smith Rowe

HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs West Ham (2-0) | Premier League | Martinelli, Smith Rowe

We moved into the top four on Wednesday after goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Emile Smith Rowe wrapped up an impressive win against West Ham United.

Having cruised past Southampton last time out, it was no surprise to see Mikel Arteta name an unchanged side as we looked to build on the momentum we built up there.

We certainly came flying out of the blocks, the intensity shown the team only matched by that of the fans in a packed Emirates Stadium.

But in a first half of few clear-cut chances, we posed the more threat – although it was West Ham who first went close as Pablo Fornals bent one just past the post from the edge of the box.

Just before the interval though, as we sought to crank up the pressure, we pieced together a lovely flowing move involving Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka, before Granit Xhaka’s shot was blocked.

The ball was cleared to the edge of the Hammers’ area, and Kieran Tierney took aim with a stunning strike that Lukasz Fabianski pushed on to the bar and over.

Moments later Alex Lacazette forced the former Gunner into action once more with a curling effort, but the breakthrough just wouldn’t come as the goalkeeper saved smartly.

After the restart, we stayed on the front foot and took the lead when the influential Lacazette played in Martinelli behind the backline and he curled the ball into the far corner.

It was some finish – and the crowd loved every second of it.

West Ham soon came back at us, with Aaron Ramsdale forced into a smart save from Jarrod Bowen just a few short minutes later, but it was only fleeting as we continued to control the tempo of the game.

We were handed a golden chance to extend our lead when Lacazette was taken down in the area by Vladimir Coufal – a challenge that led to the defender’s red card for a second bookable offence – but our striker’s resulting penalty was saved.

It made for a slightly nervier finale than perhaps our overall performance deserved.

Gabriel hooked a half chance wide, Saka saw a shot blocked on the line and then Smith Rowe called Fabianski into action as we kept the pressure on.

We finally removed any doubt about who would take the three points when Saka raced upfield and found Smith Rowe, and the England international arrowed a shot into the bottom corner.

It sealed a fine evening’s work in N5 as we moved into fourth spot.

  • Can Arsenal Realistically Win the EPL This Season?

Arsenal’s two main problems in the past has been closing narrow games out (such as when they are winning 1-0 and they concede a last minute equaliser) and beating the more physical teams in away games (such as Bolton, Blackburn and Stoke).

The problem with these highly physical teams is that they tend to bully the Arsenal players (it is no secret that Arsenal’s team is compromised mainly of young talent as their average age is only 22). Arsenal and Arsene Wenger’s philosophy is all about getting the ball down on the floor and playing exquisite football. Most teams try (and fail) to stop them playing their passing game, but it seems like the teams from the North-West of the country are just a little bit better than most.

So can The Gunners actually lift the Premier League trophy this year? Arsenal’s season relies on a lot of big ‘ifs’. If they can get Robin Van Persie (arguably their best player and certainly their best striker) back fit and firing on all cylinders, as well as the currently injured Cesc Fabregas, then they certainly have a chance.

It was only around a month ago that it seems like they were out of the title race for good (after they lost so convincingly to Chelsea and opened up an 11 point gap). Now, however, it seems that if they win their game-in-hand tomorrow that they’ll only be 1 point behind the league leaders. This is partly due to Arsenal’s revitalised form as well as Chelsea and Man Utd’s recent dip in form.

  • Mechanical Sports Betting System

If you read any book about sports betting or any kind of article about sports betting, what will you learn? Bet the underdogs! Every book, website, tout, service, you name it, are always telling you to bet the dogs. If everyone is betting the dogs, are the odds for favourites too high?

European football leagues are starting soon and to prepare myself for them, I did a small study using the data from the last two seasons from Premier League, Bundesleague, Serie A and La Liga Primera.

    Premier League

    Dogs 760 / 542 / 0.71 / -21.8k

    Fav. 760 / 728 / 0.96 / -3.2k

    Bundesleague

    Dogs 612 / 578 / 0.94 / -3.4k

    Fav. 612 / 563 / 0.92 / -4.9k

    Serie A

    Dogs 760 / 551 / 0.73 / -20.9k

    Fav. 760 / 717 / 0.94 / -4.3k

    La Liga Premier

    Dogs 760 / 748 / 0.98 / -1.2k

    Fav. 760 / 704 / 0.93 / -5.6k

How do you read that table? Let’s take Premier League for example. In the past 2 seasons you have had 760 games. If you had played every dog, your total odds would have been 542 (btw, I am using the European style odds, 1.35 etc.), return 0.71 (542/760) and for a $100 bet on every dog, you would have lost $21800.

What is interesting is that playing the favourites is a much better tactic in general, IF(!) you play every game. Only in Spain, your best tactic is to play every dog and almost break even.

Well, nobody plays every game. That would be insane. The question now is: can we use some very simple methods to find an edge from either the dogs or the favourites? I know for a fact that you can find an edge using sophisticated probability models and shopping for the best odds BUT for this article we would like to find simple methods for the average punter, who likes to bet for fun and TV-games, and not just for profit.

How about playing only home dogs, home favourites, away dogs, away favourites?

Premier League Bundesleague Serie A La Liga Premier

    home fav 0.98 0.91 0.94 0.93

    home dogs 0.84 0.94 0.77 1.03

    away fav 0.91 0.96 0.95 0.93

    away dogs 0.66 0.94 0.71 0.97

    home fav 1.55 0.98 0.91 0.90 0.92

    away fav 1.55 0.85 0.95 0.95 0.92

Home dogs in La Liga, home favourites under 1.55 in Serie A and away favourites under 1.55 in Premier- and Bundesleague and Serie A would have been a winning bet. Other possible good bets were home favourites in general in Premier, away fav 1.55 1.02 0.95 0.95 0.96

    away fav 1.55 0.89 0.99 0.99 0.96

So, in Premier League, play every home favourite and big away favourite, dogs in Bundesleague and big away favourites, big favourites in Serie A and dogs and big away favourites in Spain, and pick the highest odd possible, and you will be just fine!

In the future I will go through more powerful, mathematical methods for finding an overlay in sports betting.

  • EPL 2011-12 Preview: Chelsea Vs Liverpool

Stamford Bridge will be witness to a big match day when Liverpool travel to face Chelsea, on Saturday, November 19, 2011, in match week 12.

Villas-Boas’ men are coming off a 1-0 win away at Blackburn, on the back of Lampard’s 52nd minute header. It was an unconvincing performance by the Stamford Bridge squad for whom the game was a must-win, after consecutive league defeats, including a 5-3 loss at home to Arsenal. The visitors were colourless in the first half; after a first minute scoring opportunity to Sturridge that was saved by Robinson, the hosts dominated possession.

Chelsea were lucky to see a shot from Yakubu go wide as he reached out to prod a cross from Formica home. Sturridge was the outstanding player for Chelsea, and he came close to winning a penalty, and had another scoring attempt. Rovers almost equalised on 86 minutes when the ball ricocheted off the underside of the bar after Ivanovic’s muffed an attempted clearance off a Pedersen corner.

Liverpool played out a 0-0 stalemate against Swansea, at Anfield, in match week 11. The hosts failed to breach a Swansea defence on a day that will be remembered for Andy Carroll’s missed scoring chance more than anything else. This was Liverpool’s third consecutive home draw that had several other scoring opportunities squandered, including one by Routledge for Swansea, and Liverpool were lucky not to concede and had Reina between the posts to thank for a brilliant one-handed save that kept Routledge’s shot from doing damage.

Head to head, Chelsea and Liverpool have met 18 times, in the Premier League, and Chelsea have won on 9 of those occasions, while Liverpool have won on 7, with the remaining two games drawn. The last time these teams met was in February 2011, at the same venue; Liverpool won that game 1-0.

Currently placed 4th on the league table, the Stamford Bridge squad have hosted 5 home games, this season, winning 4 and losing the remaining one, while Liverpool who are in 6th place have had 3 wins and 2 losses in 5 games on the road.

This one promises to be an intriguing match between two well-matched teams both trying to get some momentum going in their campaign, with Chelsea enjoying an edge on the back of home advantage.

Chelsea’s starting eleven against Blackburn: Cech, Ivanovic, Alex, Terry, Cole, Ramires, Mikel, Lampard, Mata, sturridge, Malouda.

Liverpool’s starting eleven against Swansea: Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Jose Enrique, Henderson, Lucas, Adam, Downing, Carroll, Suarez.
