A Letter to God

Dear Sachin,

Dear Sachin, I know you find it extremely uncomfortable and feel embarrassed whenever you’re referred to as God. You have time and again said that you are a mere mortal whenever you’ve been revered as God or when fans have walked to you and touched your feet. But I still find it difficult to believe that you are just a mortal, and it’s not just me or your few MILLION fans; even many of your illustrious colleagues from the cricket world share the belief.

Even they find it difficult to accept that you are just another human being who is out there just to fulfill his life’s dream-of playing cricket. No Sir, we all think that you are some sort of an enigma – A rare gift from God to India and we are grateful to God for that. And you must also look at it this way – Hindus have their deities, Muslims have Allah, Christians have their Lord Jesus, Sikhs their Guru but you, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is the common demi-god we all worship. Even amongst Gods, the opinion seems divided- Lord Krishna in Gujarat, Lord Balaji in South, Lord Ganesha in Maharashtra, Maa Durga in W.Bengal. But you – you seem to enjoy a reverence across India which is unmatched even by the Gods! You belong to all of us. Irrespective of our caste and creed, age and gender, economic status and social standings-we stand united as mere ‘bhakts’ enjoying their most loved cricketer’s divine like ability. You unite India as no one does.

But you’d be mistaken to think that we revere you as God for just your batting abilities; you are much more than a mere batsman – you are our most shining representative, you bring hope to an entire nation, your modesty and humility coupled with your sincerity make you a perfect example of what an accomplished man must be like. You have made the game famous, you have brought the game to every street of this immensely vast country, you made fans out of housewives, you turned even skeptical fathers into believers of your almost divine-like ability (personal experience with my dad during 2003 WC match against Pakistan).

You may have been playing for more than 20 years now but for us you are still a teenager enjoying his game, wanting to just bat and entertain his millions of supporters. You seem to have no limits, while playing you seem to overcome all the physical barriers which sets in mere mortals due to age. You seem to have turned the cycles of nature, you have stopped time- it seems even time wants to enjoy your batting!

And in all these years, you have paid heeds to our unreasonable demands, although there have been few failures. But then, even Gods don’t fulfill each and every wish of its disciples. But your failure makes us crest-fallen, your success not only leaves us exuberant but they even make us forget our sorrows. But now you mustn’t fail; in fact you are NOT suppose to fail because now you carry on the hopes and backing of an entire nation of billions who want to see their God get his hand on the World Cup. And when you do that, believe me, you’ll leave an indelible image in the minds of millions.

You’ll bring us the most cherished moments of our lives when we’d see you smiling with the trophy in your well-deserved hands. It would easily be one of our lives most pleasant moment; an image one would remember even during his last days.

Someday, few of your milestones might be crossed (for the moment even this seems far-fetched) but be assured that the moments of pure delight you have created, the sense of unification you have generated, the exuberance and the sense of ecstasy we’ve experienced and the sheer entertainment you have provided would all remain forever unmatched. Few are those for whom so many millions will be having a uniform prayer. Few in the history of men have enjoyed such uniform affection and warmth. Even fewer would be those who have won the hearts of even their staunchest critics and opponents. Please please please fulfill our dreams and expectations – Get us the Cup. YOU JUST CANNOT FAIL.

*What your colleagues and opponents say about you-

Mathew Hayden:

I have seen GOD, he bats at no.4 for India in Tests.

Ravi Shashtri:

He is someone sent from up there to play cricket and go back.

Brian Lara:

Sachin is a genius, I am a mere mortal!

Barry Richards:

Sachin is cricket’s GOD

Martin Crowe:

The shot played on this ball is only possible for the GOD of cricket.

Steve Waugh:

There is no shame losing to such a great player(Sachin).

Mathew Hayden:

His life seems to be a stillness in a frantic world… [When he goes out to bat], it is beyond chaos – it is a frantic appeal by a nation to one man. The people see him as a God…

Barry Richards:

Consensus is that Sir Donald Bradman was the best batsman ever to play Cricket. Sir Don did not play One-Day Cricket but if he did, he could easily be Sachin Tendulkar.

BBC Sports:

Beneath the helmet, under that unruly curly hair, inside the cranium, there is something we don’t know, something beyond scientific measure. Something that allows him to soar, to roam a territory of sport that, forget us, even those who are gifted enough to play alongside him cannot even fathom. When he goes out to bat, people switch on their television sets and switch off their lives.

Hashim Amla:

Nothing bad can happen to us if we’re on a plane in India with Sachin Tendulkar on it. Hashim Amla reassures himself as he boards a flight.

Andrew Symonds:

To Sachin, the man we all want to be.

Glen McGrath:

The joy he brings to the millions of his countrymen, the grace with which he handles all the adulation and the expectations and his innate humility – all make for a one-in-a-billion individual.

Navjot Singh Sidhu:

India me aap PrimeMinister ko ek Baar Katghare me khada kar sakte hain..Par Sachin Tendulkar par Ungli nahi utha Sakte..

NKP Salve, former Union Minister when Sachin was accused of ball tempering

Sachin cannot cheat. He is to cricket what Mahatma Gandhi was to politics. It’s clear discrimination.

Peter Roebuck – Aussie journalist

On a train from Shimla to Delhi, there was a halt in one of the stations. The train stopped by for few minutes as usual. Sachin was nearing century, batting on 98. The passengers, railway officials, everyone on the train waited for Sachin to complete the century. This Genius can stop time in India!

Now, tell me Sachin are we to be blamed if we consider you as God and have the highest expectations!

Your bhakt
