MLS vs. International Football [Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga…]

The UK and Europe are still leagues ahead of the MLS and although the MLS has been improving significantly over the past few years, it is still miles behind that of the English Premier League and all other leagues in Europe. An argument is constantly made against the MLS, many criticize that is not as competitive and that there are many other American sports (NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB) that overshadow soccer in this country. The Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers have a very solid fan base and that fan base continues to grow.

Allan Russell, professional footballer and striker coach joins TYT Sports host Francis Maxwell to discuss the difference between the leagues.

Will the MLS ever catch up to the leagues in Europe?
What does the MLS have to do to attract more fans?
Are you a fan of the MLS?

I dont understand the USA. There are best in everything. In Football Baseball Basketball why not in Soccer too?

Football is the worlds best athletic sport, we have no interest in the lesser demanding sports, soccer will never catch Football fans from Americans. Its unfortunate because soccer is a beautiful physical sport

Lets not even get started about the american youth academies?

MLS has salary cap, other leagues don't, MLS's salary cap is low while UEFA's financial fair play rules is a higher than MLS's, if MLS removed salary cap or increased it, then it would be more competitive or if UEFA lowers and adds a lower salary cap.

This was 2014 now 2019 come see MLS now it’s on par with some of Europe’s top leagues

U MUST BE JOKING. SCOTTISH LEAGUE IS GARBAGE. ITS ONLY CELTIC AND RANGERS WINNING THE TITLE. OTHER THAN THAT SCOTTISH LEAGUE IS CRAP.

No American child aspiring to play football dreams with being in the MLS until they find out they're not good enough for Europe leaves.

  9. Avatar de Cali Méro

MLS = french Ligue 1 with PSG, OL and OM for the most powerfull team..

  10. Avatar de Papa Kojo

Wtf is playoffs. No where in the world does playoffs in football. It makes no sense.

  11. Avatar de Ec09

With no relegation/promotion, weaker teams will always suck because there's absolutely no incentive for them to get better, since there are no absolutely consequences for finishing dead last in the leagued, that is why weaker and lower ranked teams in MLS will stay weak and just not care at all.

  12. Avatar de ItsmeSmile

Indian Super League is better than MLS

  13. Avatar de Craig Miller

Why the yanks always say they support a British club instead of a team from their own country ? Us Brits support our local teams, the one that represents where we come from. We don't pull names out a hat at random.

Great striking coach but this guy has never played for Rangers. He was involved in the youth set up before getting sent to Hamilton Accy I believe. So you misleading people has put me off ever watching your videos again. If I am mistaken then apologies!

  15. Avatar de Andrew H

They'll never be promotion and relegation. MLS wants teams to buy their way in. They don't want smaller clubs working their way up. This will also prevent teams from going bankrupt

  16. Avatar de TheWickedGeniuses

MLS is pretty weak but it is on the rise

I wonder what he thinks of it now that European football players travel on weekends to the US to see basketball and American football games

So basically these are a bunch of Scottish MLS haters..whenever I watch there videos they don't have much positive thoughts towards MLS…

well I hope they know MLS is much better than the SPL..Celtic is the only good team in the leauge

  24. Avatar de dhksrksalem

I think MLS is comparable to Chinese super league or Saudi Arabian league.

  25. Avatar de sianspana viva

football is a liberal sports in US. but a right wing game in Europe.

  26. Avatar de Kenpachi CG

Allan Russel never even played in MLS. he isn't qualified to talk about this topic lol. shows how good he is.

  27. Avatar de Trevor Foreman

MLS is definitely miles ahead of what they used to be. I think the caliber will eventually catch up.

  28. Avatar de Brandon Manley

MLS is better than the Scottish Premier League

  29. Avatar de Satisfaction

united states is so diverse that it can easily win the world of football/soccer..fan base, stadiums, competition…..too easy….the only difference between US and the world is that everybody in US plays "every sport" you can imagine and the rest of the world only plays soccer…yes US loves american football, basketball, and baseball….but can easily win the the world of football/soccer…

  30. Avatar de Kjernekar

MLS needs promotion and relegation. No possibility for these makes for less fans, and less spirited fans. This keeps the sport from evolving in both competitive and popularity.

  31. Avatar de Kenpachi CG

I want them to make a video this year, with how much landmarks MLS did this season. then they can see how stupid they sound

  32. Avatar de Demarius Coleman

I hate everyone says the MLS will NEVER be good as the BPL and La Liga, and Bundesliga, and etc. But it doesn't have to be. It just has to be good enough to not be viewed as a joke and also a retirement league ( I don't view it that way). Never say never, and this league wasn't made to be judged by europeans

  33. Avatar de SashasGuitar Covers

MLS all stars just beat Tottenham 2-1. I know it's all stars against a team, but still.

  34. Avatar de Pundit of philosophy

The NASL would not bend over for the MLS. but i think the USL will.

  35. Avatar de TheJayef

I wish it would become more popular here in America, but I guess we have too many sports lol

  36. Avatar de Brian Enwude

Majority of European clubs go Bankrupt.

  37. Avatar de Jordan’s Elections Hub

hey. we already do love the game the people that like dumb football over soccer are the ones of who don't love the game.

  38. Avatar de John Maddin

The MLS will get better and better with time and players from the CONCACAF region in general will improve with it as well especially the US and Canadian players. Just as Rome was not built in a day neither will the level of play in MLS improve in a day it takes time and up and coming generations playing more at a higher level but the results are clear that the players in North America are getting better. Years ago in Europe both the US and Canada would be seen as an easy game to most Euro nations well they aren't now they are respected as sides to respect. The future is bright for the sport in this part of the world and its only time til they are a real power in the sport.

  39. Avatar de PieEater

The thing that makes the MLS awesome is that it has Playoffs. The best teams make it to the playoffs and fight for the MLS cup. Other leagues have tournaments but its not like the MLS. In the MLS the regular season games count if you want to make it in the playoffs.

  40. Avatar de YoMamaSoLlama

I've heard that the NASL, NPSL, and USSSA are thinking of pro-rel, would be sweet

  41. Avatar de Holy Child

Really, the only thing European leagues have against MLS anymore is that MLS is an extremely young league and has no history. Sure, our league lost 15-5 total when Premier League teams played our teams last year. But our teams have developed so much in even the past 3 months. I've seen very big differences in skill in MLS games. And it showed in the world cup how much our players have improved. Our imports in other leagues have gone from being in the reserves to being in the starting 11 in the past 5 or so years. Even though many Europeans and other people from the rest of the world belittle American soccer, you can not deny that the game in this country has improved drastically.

  42. Avatar de Thomas Cox

notice that in england you dont see fans wearing too much team apparel. colors etc. in mls everyone has a hat, scarf, or kit (we say jersey a lot here).

  43. Avatar de XGamerGirl1995

I agree 100%! I wish Football was taken seriously here in the US. The World Cup was so beautiful, I don't even care about the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB anymore. Football is beautiful, international & in my opinion a stronger sport that requires more dedication! Best sport yet.. I don't play but I support the sport as a whole & also live and breathe football

  44. Avatar de Michael Crew

Is this a developed Irish accent…I'm sorry because I don't really know

  45. Avatar de XAVI68S

Football = PREMIER LEAGUE, LA LIGA, SERIE A, BUNDESLIGA.

Rest of lagues are normal nothing special.

  46. Avatar de Rocky Esposito

Allan is right, we Americans have too many high profile sports leagues already… The NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL are already set with their fan base respectively. I am American, and I truly enjoy watching the Premier League every week. The MLS will never come close to you guys, and thats OK! For England, football is their number 1 sport, and their league is top class. Klinsmann is right to prefer players who play in Europe. The level of comp. is tremendous. MLS will never generate that skill level.
